What is convert-pdf-to-png?

A procedure for turning the pages of a PDF document into PNG image files. PNG is an image format that is useful for previews, visual comparisons, and image processing.

Use it to convert PDF pages into numbered PNG files with tools such as ImageMagick, MuPDF, Poppler, macOS Preview tooling, or a JavaScript fallback.

It makes PDF pages easier to inspect or use in image-based workflows, while allowing several conversion programs to be tried if one is unavailable.

Backend Selection

Try system tools first (better rendering for complex PDFs), fall back to the JS script.

Backends you can try:

magick (ImageMagick) - Linux/MacOS
mutool (MuPDF) - Linux/MacOS
pdftoppm (Poppler) - Linux/MacOS
sips (Scriptable Image Processing System) - MacOS Only
JS fallback (pdfjs) - under <CURRENT_SKILL_DIR>/scripts/ directory.

NOTICE: All backends should output <pdf-name>_page_<N>.png in the target directory.

Different backends produce slightly different filename patterns (0-based vs 1-based, padding, separator). Rename after conversion if the downstream consumer requires strict <pdf-name>_page_<N>.png format.
