deploy-preview

A procedure for publishing a feature branch to a staging preview, a temporary online copy used for review before merging.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to push a branch, deploy it to staging, verify the preview, fix problems, and share the resulting URL.
Why use it?
It checks the branch and tests before deployment, then provides a preview URL where the page and key feature can be inspected.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00041 $0.00429
Opus 5 $0.00020 $0.00215
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00086
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00043

Measured 2d ago against content hash 9b084b02d9da, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

deploy-preview scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/deploy-preview.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Deploy Preview

Deploy the current branch to a preview URL for review before merging.

Inputs

  • Branch name (defaults to current branch)
  • Environment (defaults to staging)

Steps

  1. Verify branch is clean

    git status --porcelain

If dirty, commit or stash before proceeding.

  2. Run tests locally

    npm test

Do not deploy if tests fail.

  3. Push to remote

    git push origin HEAD

  4. Trigger preview deploy

    scripts/deploy-preview.sh

This builds, uploads, and returns a preview URL.

  5. Verify the preview

    • Open the preview URL
    • Check: page loads, no console errors, key feature works
    • If broken: fix locally, re-push, re-deploy
  6. Share the preview URL

    • Post in the PR description
    • Or share in the team channel

Conventions

  • Preview URLs follow the pattern: preview-{branch}.staging.example.com
  • Preview deploys expire after 7 days
  • Only one preview per branch (re-deploying replaces the previous)

Edge Cases

  • Branch name has slashes: The deploy script sanitizes / to -
  • Large assets: Preview deploys skip video files >50MB
  • Environment variables: Preview uses staging env vars, not production
Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

deploy-preview is a skill published in the GitHub repository zakelfassi/skills-driven-development (18 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 41 tokens to every session and 429 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
