In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create files, replace their full contents, or edit specific matching text in workspace files.
Why use it?
It provides controlled file changes without allowing paths outside the workspace or relying on broad, imprecise edits.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00017 $0.00638
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00319
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00128
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00064

Security

Grade A, and why

file-modify-skill scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

File Modify Tool

Write new files or edit existing files with exact string replacement. Uses the workspace-contained native filesystem backend.

Path sandbox: all paths resolve inside the per-workflow workspace root. Use workspace-relative paths (e.g. reports/summary.md); .. and ~ segments are rejected, and absolute paths are remapped into the workspace.

Schema Fields

Field Type Required Description
operation string Yes write (create or wholesale-replace the file) or edit (surgical find-and-replace inside an existing file)
file_path string Yes Path to the file
content string If write Full file content to write — overwrites any existing file at this path
old_string string If edit Exact text to find and replace
new_string string If edit Replacement text
replace_all boolean No Replace all occurrences (default: false, old_string must be unique)

Examples

Write a new file:

{
  "operation": "write",
  "file_path": "/path/to/new_file.py",
  "content": "print('hello world')"
}

Edit an existing file:

{
  "operation": "edit",
  "file_path": "/path/to/file.py",
  "old_string": "def old_name():",
  "new_string": "def new_name():"
}

Replace all occurrences:

{
  "operation": "edit",
  "file_path": "/path/to/file.py",
  "old_string": "TODO",
  "new_string": "DONE",
  "replace_all": true
}

Response Format

Write:

{"operation": "write", "file_path": "/path/to/file.py"}

Edit:

{"operation": "edit", "file_path": "/path/to/file.py", "occurrences": 1}

Guidelines

  1. Use write to create a new file or replace an existing file's contents wholesale. Provide the full new contents in content; any existing file at file_path is replaced.
  2. Use edit for surgical string replacement inside an existing file — it is the right choice when you want to change a small portion of a file rather than rewrite the whole thing.
  3. For edit: old_string must be unique in the file unless replace_all is true.
  4. Prefer edit over write when changing only part of an existing file — it produces a smaller diff and is less destructive.
  5. Read the file first before editing to ensure correct context.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
