design-canvas

design-canvas is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Zfinix/aster. It costs 74 tokens per session (822 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A set of instructions for creating visual HTML pages and groups of artboards, which are separate screens shown together for comparison. It also explains how to open those pages in a browser preview.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to make a single-page mockup, report, visual explainer, or one-page artifact, or to compare several screens and design variants on a canvas.
Why use it?
It gives UI work a visible result to inspect instead of leaving designs as descriptions or scattered CSS changes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00074 $0.00822
Opus 5.5 $0.00030 $0.00329
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00015 $0.00164
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00082

Security

Grade A, and why

design-canvas scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 51 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Artifacts and design canvases

Two tools, one job: give the user something to look at instead of a description.

  • artifact for one page: a report, a visual explainer, a mockup, a one-pager.
  • canvas for several boards: screens of a flow, variants of one screen, before and after.

Both write under .aster/ in the repo and open in the browser with open_preview.

Artifact

  1. Build the complete document first. One <style> block, no build step, no external framework unless the project already has one.
  2. Write it with artifact action create (or update for an existing name), passing name, title, and the whole html.
  3. Open it with action open before ending the turn. Once per page per turn.
{"action":"create","name":"pricing-page","title":"Pricing page","html":"<!doctype html>…"}

Pages live at .aster/artifacts/<name>/index.html. list shows what exists.

Canvas

Use a canvas when one page cannot carry the comparison. Each board is its own HTML document; the viewer lays them in rows with their titles.

  1. {"action":"create","name":"chat-redesign","title":"Chat redesign"} once.
  2. {"action":"board","name":"chat-redesign","board":"main","title":"Chat panel","width":680,"height":1400,"html":"<!doctype html>…"} per board. Re-sending a board replaces it in place.
  3. {"action":"open","name":"chat-redesign"} at the end.

Boards live at .aster/canvases/<name>/project/<board>.html, the index at canvas.json, and the viewer at viewer.html. Keep boards self-contained: a board cannot see another board's CSS or scripts.

Designing well

  • Adopt what exists. Find the project's tokens, theme, and components before inventing a palette. A token file outranks every default below.
  • One accent, three weights. A ground, a foreground, a dim foreground, one accent, one danger colour. Do not tint every surface.
  • Type does the hierarchy. Two sizes and two weights go further than five colours. Body text at 4.5:1 contrast, even the 11px labels.
  • Space in one rhythm. Pick a scale (4, 8, 16, 24) and use it everywhere. Rows in a list share one gap; blocks share a larger one.
  • Real content. No lorem ipsum, no invented metrics. Use the user's own words and files; a missing fact becomes a visible placeholder like [PRICE].
  • No AI tropes. No gradient washes, no left-border cards, no emoji, no fake browser chrome. If the design needs a metaphor, draw it.
  • Accessible as drawn. Real <button>, <a href>, <input> with a label. Icon-only buttons get aria-label. Decorative SVG gets aria-hidden.
  • Verify by looking. Open the artifact or canvas and read it at phone width as well as desktop. A clipped or unreadable board is not done.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
