web-research

web-research is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Zfinix/aster. It costs 79 tokens per session (404 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide for checking current information on the web, such as documentation, prices, software releases, versions, and news. It describes searching first and then extracting information from selected pages.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when a user asks about recent or latest information, or when a fact cannot be verified from the code repository. It covers API documentation, pricing, releases, and other changing information.
Why use it?
It helps avoid answering current questions from outdated knowledge or unverified guesses. It also provides a consistent way to retrieve readable page content.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00079 $0.00404
Opus 5 $0.00039 $0.00202
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.00081
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00040

Measured 4d ago against content hash 00becdb70769, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

web-research scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

What it actually says

Web research

  1. Check the web, don't answer from stale knowledge. When the user asks for anything current, recent, latest, or that you do not know for certain — API docs, pricing, releases, model lists, changelogs, news, versions — use the web MCP tools through the aster_mcp bridge, not curl. The user assumes Aster is up to date; answer only after checking, or say you could not verify. curl on a doc endpoint returns raw HTML/MDX, embedded JS components, or null; the web tools return clean Markdown and full search results.
  2. Search first, then extract. web/search to find the right page, then web/extract on one or two of the results. Never guess a doc URL and curl it blind.
  3. Invoke through the bridge. aster_mcp with action: "execute", name: "web/search", and arguments: {"query": "..."}; for web/extract use {"url": "..."}. When unsure of a schema, action: "describe" with the tool name first.
  4. curl keeps the status-check job. Use curl only for -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" probes and minimal output checks, never for reading pages you could extract.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

web-research is a skill published in the GitHub repository Zfinix/aster (40 stars, last pushed 9d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 79 tokens to every session and 404 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
