How it starts

Purpose

Make Related Work position the paper rather than catalogue papers. Derive the comparisons from the manuscript's motivation and contributions, represent prior work on its own terms, and lead each subsection to a concrete unresolved communications or networking problem.

Hard Relevance Gate

Apply this fail-closed gate to every nontrivial clause, meaning every clause that carries a distinct factual or comparative claim. A detail is admissible only when both mappings are explicit:

  1. Manuscript mapping. The Introduction or contribution statement establishes the comparison dimension that makes the detail relevant.
  2. Gap mapping. The detail narrows the comparison or performs a necessary step toward the subsection's research gap.

If either mapping is missing, remove the detail. Reframe it only when the primary source supports the new comparison and the revised clause makes both mappings explicit. Factual accuracy, prominence in the source, recency, citation count, narrative convenience, and word-budget pressure never justify an otherwise irrelevant detail.

Establish the Manuscript Frame

  1. Read the available title, abstract, Introduction, contribution statement, and existing Related Work. Do not assume every manuscript contains each element.
  2. Surface material inconsistencies among these elements instead of silently choosing one. Use the Introduction for narrative priority once the framing is coherent.
  3. Recover the literature-facing claims: what problem is established, what capability is missing, and what the paper says it contributes.
  4. Derive comparison dimensions from those claims. A useful dimension may concern an assumption, mechanism, input, output, evidence, deployment condition, theoretical result, or another distinction that the manuscript makes relevant.
  5. Do not impose a stock taxonomy. A fact reported by a cited source is not automatically a useful comparison.
  6. Before drafting, build a compact relevance map from each manuscript-established comparison dimension to the subsection gap and the source evidence admissible along that route. Do not admit a clause that has no route through this map.
  7. Let each subsection cover one coherent research conversation. Use as many subsections and paragraphs as the argument and venue require. Do not introduce a new comparison dimension only in the gap sentence.
