scrapy-quick-spider

scrapy-quick-spider is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from zytelabs/claude-webscraping-skills. It costs 133 tokens per session (1,654 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A single-file Python Scrapy spider for crawling an online shop category, finding product pages, and extracting structured product data with Zyte's AI extraction.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to scrape an e-commerce category, follow its product links and pagination, and save the results, by default as JSON Lines.
Why use it?
It avoids setting up a full Scrapy project and avoids writing page-specific selectors for the supported product and navigation extractions.

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00133 $0.01654
Opus 5 $0.00067 $0.00827
Sonnet 5 $0.00027 $0.00331
Haiku 4.5 $0.00013 $0.00165

Security

Grade A, and why

scrapy-quick-spider scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (references/spider-template.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Scrapy Quick Spider

Builds a single-file, runnable Scrapy spider for ecommerce category crawling using Zyte API's AI extraction. No project setup. Just a .py file the user can run immediately.

When to use this skill

User provides a category/listing URL and wants all products from it scraped. Output is a self-contained Python script saved to their workspace.

What you need from the user

  • Entry URL — the category or product listing page (e.g. https://shop.com/category/widgets)
  • Output format (optional) — default to jsonl

That's it. No detail page URL needed — the spider discovers product URLs from the listing page automatically.

How it works

The spider uses two Zyte API AI extraction types, chained together:

  1. productNavigation on the category page → returns product URLs + pagination
  2. product on each product URL → returns structured product data

No selectors. No schema definition. No user confirmation step. Just generate and save.

Read references/zyte-extraction-fields.md to understand the exact fields returned by each extraction type before writing the spider.

Spider architecture

Use AsyncCrawlerProcess to run from a script (no project needed):

from scrapy import Spider, Request
from scrapy.crawler import AsyncCrawlerProcess

Spider flow

start()
  └─► parse_navigation()       # productNavigation extraction
        ├─► parse_navigation()  # follow nextPage if present
        └─► parse_product() # product extraction for each item URL

AsyncCrawlerProcess

Use AsyncCrawlerProcess instead of CrawlerProcess — it manages the asyncio event loop internally. Do not wrap in asyncio.run() or use await process.crawl(). Call process.crawl(Spider) (sync) then process.start() to run. Wrapping in asyncio.run() causes RuntimeError: Event loop stopped before Future completed on exit.

All spider methods must be async.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
