generic-mcp

generic-mcp is an agent for Claude Code from atpaawej/openboard. It costs 0 tokens per session (617 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for connecting any MCP-compatible client or agent to OpenBoard, a local dashboard and server, through standard input and output. MCP is a common protocol for discovering and calling tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to configure an MCP client, start the OpenBoard server, discover its tools, and work with OpenBoard boards and canvases.
Why use it?
It gives clients a consistent command, configuration format, and verification process for opening the connection and checking the available tools.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.00617
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00309
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00123
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00062

Security

Grade A, and why

generic-mcp scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Generic MCP Client Integration Guide

OpenBoard connects to any client or agent framework supporting the Model Context Protocol (MCP) over stdio.

1. Installation

Install OpenBoard globally via npm:

npm install -g openboard

2. OpenBoard Startup

Start the local OpenBoard web dashboard and server at any time:

openboard start

For AI agent operations via MCP, your MCP client launches openboard mcp directly over stdio.

3. Universal Stdio Server Parameters & Configuration

For any generic MCP client, configure the following parameters:

  • Command / Executable: openboard (or absolute path to openboard binary)
  • Arguments: ["mcp"]
  • Transport: stdio
  • Protocol Version: 2024-11-05 (JSON-RPC 2.0)

Generic JSON Configuration Format

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "openboard": {
      "command": "openboard",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Equivalent Shell Invocation

openboard mcp

4. Verification

Verify that your generic MCP client can initialize the connection and query available tools:

  1. Send an initialize JSON-RPC request.
  2. Send a tools/list request.
  3. Confirm that all 13 tools are returned (list_boards, create_board, get_board, rename_board, duplicate_board, favorite_board, delete_board, restore_board, get_canvas_state, get_canvas_screenshot, create_shapes, update_shapes, delete_shapes).

5. Example Workflows & Prompts

Standard Multi-Step Interaction Workflow

User:
List my OpenBoard boards.

Agent:
[Calls list_boards tool]
Found boards: "System Design", "Roadmap".

User:
Create a board called "Auth Pipeline" and draw OAuth2 authorization code flow.

Agent:
[Calls create_board with { name: "Auth Pipeline" }]
[Calls create_shapes with Client, Auth Server, Resource Server shapes and sequential arrows]
Created components and connected OAuth flow.

User:
Inspect the canvas and return a visual screenshot.

Agent:
[Calls get_canvas_state and get_canvas_screenshot]
Returned semantic layout and SVG vector screenshot.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

generic-mcp is an agent published in the GitHub repository atpaawej/openboard (3 stars, last pushed 19d ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 617 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
