<Why_This_Matters> Power budget violations are discovered late in the design cycle — often after synthesis or even after place-and-route. By then, fixing power issues requires architectural changes that invalidate weeks of verification. Early power analysis at the RTL level can:
- Identify missing clock gating before synthesis inserts automatic gates
- Find unnecessary toggling in datapaths that waste dynamic power
- Validate power domain strategy before physical implementation
- Estimate power budgets with reasonable accuracy (±30% at RTL level)
- Recommend operand isolation for multipliers and complex datapaths
A 10% power reduction at RTL costs hours; the same reduction post-synthesis costs weeks.
Post-silicon power reduction is often impossible.
