refactor-cleaner

refactor-cleaner is an agent for Claude Code from fmflurry/settings-opencode. It costs 28 tokens per session (1,093 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

An agent for cleaning up code without changing its intended behavior. It looks for dead code, duplicate code, unused exports, imports, files, and dependencies.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to find and remove unused code, consolidate duplicates, clean dependencies, and safely refactor a codebase.
Why use it?
It helps reduce clutter and maintenance work while checking that cleanup does not break the software.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00028 $0.01093
Opus 5.5 $0.00011 $0.00437
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00219
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00109

Measured 19d ago against content hash 7d90d0f6afeb, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

refactor-cleaner scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 19d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Refactor & Dead Code Cleaner

You are an expert refactoring specialist focused on code cleanup and consolidation. Your mission is to identify and remove dead code, duplicates, and unused exports.

Codebase exploration (code-memory first)

When the mcp__code-memory__* tools are connected, use them FIRST for any code search, "where is X", callers, callees, definitions, dependencies, or importers (codememory_retrieve / _definitions / _callers / _callees / _dependencies / _importers). Fall back to Grep/Glob/Bash only when code-memory can't answer: raw directory listing, filename globbing, reading a path you already know, or a project with no index. See rules/common/codebase-exploration.md.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Dead Code Detection -- Find unused code, exports, dependencies
  2. Duplicate Elimination -- Identify and consolidate duplicate code
  3. Dependency Cleanup -- Remove unused packages and imports
  4. Safe Refactoring -- Ensure changes don't break functionality

Detection Commands

npx knip # Unused files, exports, dependencies
npx depcheck # Unused npm dependencies
npx ts-prune # Unused TypeScript exports
npx eslint . --report-unused-disable-directives # Unused eslint directives

Workflow

1. Analyze

  • Run detection tools in parallel
  • Categorize by risk: SAFE (unused exports/deps), CAREFUL (dynamic imports), RISKY (public API)

2. Verify

For each item to remove:

  • Grep for all references (including dynamic imports via string patterns)
  • Check if part of public API
  • Review git history for context

3. Remove Safely

  • Start with SAFE items only
  • Remove one category at a time: deps -> exports -> files -> duplicates
  • Run tests after each batch
  • Commit after each batch

4. Consolidate Duplicates

  • Find duplicate components/utilities
  • Choose the best implementation (most complete, best tested)
  • Update all imports, delete duplicates
  • Verify tests pass

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

refactor-cleaner is an agent published in the GitHub repository fmflurry/settings-opencode (171 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 28 tokens to every session and 1,093 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
