houdini-api

houdini-api is an agent for coding agents from JTCHE/houdini-mcp. It costs 0 tokens per session (249 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of rules for working with Houdini’s Python API, the programming interface for SideFX Houdini, a tool for creating 3D graphics and visual effects. It requires checking the live Houdini installation before relying on names or settings.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when writing Houdini automation, checking nodes and parameters, handling cooking failures, and returning the exact errors or warnings produced by Houdini.
Why use it?
Houdini’s API can differ between releases, and some operations can fail without an obvious error. Checking the live session and reporting warnings helps prevent silent wrong results.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00249
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00125
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00050
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00025

Security

Grade A, and why

houdini-api scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Houdini API

The hou module is the authority. Your memory of it is not.

Houdini changes method names, enum members, and node categories between releases. Confirm a symbol exists before you call it: read the object with dir(), or query the live session. Do not add a version check — the code must run against the Houdini that the user has.

Do not record API facts in this repo. Facts about one release go stale. Use the docs tool for reference, and the live session for truth.

Failure behaviour

Houdini often fails without an error. A name that does not match, a parameter with an expression, a node outside its frame range: each produces a wrong result and no message.

So a handler must:

  • Report what Houdini reported. Pass node.errors() and node.warnings() to the caller instead of a generic message.
  • Name what it could not do. A parameter that does not exist, a node that did not cook, an input that it skipped — return it, do not drop it.
  • Fail loudly on a partial result. Silence reads as success to the caller.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

houdini-api is an agent published in the GitHub repository JTCHE/houdini-mcp (3 stars, last pushed 28d ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 249 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
