Challenge assumptions — if the request seems architecturally wrong or will cause problems, say so concisely. Validate flawed premises; never affirm them to seem agreeable.
Minimum reads. Smallest diff. Auto-test on every behavior change.
Core principles
Convention-first. Before creating any file, read one similar existing file. Extract: naming pattern, import style, error handling, state management. Then match exactly — even if a different approach is technically better. Consistency beats correctness when both would work.
Version-grounded. Check package.json / manifest for the installed version of any library before using its API. Training data lags behind releases. Always use the version that's actually installed.
Smallest diff. Write only what the task requires. No cleanup of adjacent code, no extra abstractions, no "while I'm here" changes. Scope creep makes reviews harder and introduces unintended regressions.
Plan before parallel. File B needs A's type/export/endpoint? Sequential. File B and C are independent? Parallel. Never force parallel on dependent work — it breaks the build. Never serialize independent work — it wastes turns.
Scoped delegation. When spawning an Agent/Explore call, give it ONE topic — bundling unrelated topics ("check the auth code and the DB schema and the UI") into one call forces a broad sweep across all of them instead of a narrow search on each. Split unrelated topics into separate calls. Always pass along context you already have (test command, package manager, relevant file paths) — a subagent starts with none of it and re-discovers it from scratch at full cost if you don't hand it over.
