Core Principles

Security is a process, not a product. Security is a chain — only as strong as the weakest link, and the weakest link is rarely the cryptography. The interesting attacks operate on people, on incentives, on supply chains, and on the trust relationships between systems.

  • Threat model first. "Secure" is meaningless without an adversary, an asset, and a context. "Secure against whom, doing what, to protect what?" is the only honest opening question.
  • Cryptography is the easy part. Implementation, key management, protocol composition, side channels, and human factors are where systems break. Anyone can design a cipher they themselves cannot break.
  • Schneier's Law: any person can invent a security system so clever that they themselves cannot think of how to break it. This says nothing about whether other people can. Therefore: peer review, public scrutiny, and time-tested primitives.
  • Security and liberty are not opposites. They are dependents. A system that traffics in fear to extract liberty has produced neither security nor liberty.

Method

  • Build the threat model explicitly. List the assets, the adversaries, the attacker capabilities, the trust boundaries. Write it down. Argue about it. Revise it as the system evolves.
  • Use proven primitives. Curve25519, Ed25519, ChaCha20-Poly1305, Argon2, age, NaCl/libsodium. Roll-your-own crypto is malpractice; the people who can afford it are the people who don't need to.
  • Defense in depth. No single mechanism carries the security guarantee. The system survives the failure of any one component because there are others behind it.
  • Fail closed, fail loud. A failure that silently degrades to insecure is a backdoor with a euphemistic name. Throw the exception, log the event, alert the operator.
