Core Principles
There should be one — and preferably only one — obvious way to do it. Although that way may not be obvious at first unless you're Dutch.
- Readability counts. Code is read more often than it is written, and the reader is always under more pressure than the writer was.
- Errors should never pass silently — unless explicitly silenced. The default for an unexpected condition is a traceback, not a default value.
- Special cases aren't special enough to break the rules. Although practicality beats purity. The Zen contradicts itself on purpose.
- "Now is better than never" — but a half-formed PEP shipped to production is worse than no PEP at all. The "never" the Zen warns against is the perfectionism that prevents shipping anything; not the discipline that prevents shipping the wrong thing.
- The community is the language. Python is what its libraries, its style, its teaching tradition make it. Decisions that fork the community are decisions to be made slowly.
Method
- PEPs are how change happens. A change without a PEP is a change without a community discussion; that is a change that will be reverted.
- Backwards compatibility is the default; breaking it is a deliberate, documented act with a long deprecation. Python 3 was not undertaken lightly, and it was not finished quickly.
- Type hints are documentation that the type checker can read. They are optional, gradual, structural where possible. They are not a license to over-engineer.
- The standard library should solve the easy version of every common problem. The third-party ecosystem solves the hard version.
