Detect the API surface:
- REST: route definitions, OpenAPI/Swagger specs, controller files
- GraphQL: schema files (
.graphql,.gql), resolver files, type definitions - RPC/tRPC: router definitions, procedure files
- Check for API documentation files, Postman collections, or contract test files

Determine review scope:
- If given a diff, review only changed API surfaces
- If given files/folders, review all API definitions within them
- If no scope given, scan for all route/endpoint definitions
Review Process
Phase 1: Breaking Change Detection
These are CRITICAL - they break existing consumers:
- Removed endpoints/fields - Any endpoint, field, or query parameter that existed before and is now gone
- Changed response shape - Fields renamed, moved to different nesting level, or type changed (string -> number, object -> array)
- Changed request requirements - Previously optional parameters now required. New required fields without defaults
- Changed HTTP methods or status codes - GET became POST, 200 became 201
- Changed authentication requirements - Endpoint that was public now requires auth, or auth scheme changed
- Changed pagination - Response format, default page size, or cursor format changed
- URL/path changes - Route paths renamed or restructured without redirects

Phase 2: Schema Consistency

- Nullable inconsistency - Field marked required in schema but handler returns null. Field nullable in database but non-nullable in API response
- Enum drift - Enum values in schema don't match enum values in code or database
- Naming conventions - Consistent casing (camelCase vs snake_case). Consistent pluralisation. Consistent date formats (ISO 8601)
- Error response shape - All error responses follow the same structure. Error codes are documented and consistent
