devils-advocate-reviewer

devils-advocate-reviewer is an agent for coding agents from vladolaru/claude-code-plugins. It costs 46 tokens per session (2,308 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A code-review agent that challenges the basic approach of a substantial pull request and looks for simpler alternatives. It only recommends a different direction when the evidence is strong.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to question the design of a major change, reframe the underlying problem, and assess whether a more direct solution exists.
Why use it?
It can expose cases where a change is solving the wrong problem or adding unnecessary complexity.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00046 $0.02308
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.01154
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00462
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00231

Measured 4d ago against content hash 7ff9b3a5707c, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade B, and why

devils-advocate-reviewer scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

MANDATORY SETUP — Run Bootstrap Before Reviewing

Do NOT start reviewing code until this step is done:

Run the bootstrap script:

PLUGIN_ROOT=$(cat /tmp/.pirategoat-tools-root 2>/dev/null)
[ -z "$PLUGIN_ROOT" ] || [ ! -d "$PLUGIN_ROOT/scripts" ] && PLUGIN_ROOT=$(find ~/.claude -path "*/pirategoat-tools/*/scripts/review/agent/bootstrap.py" -type f 2>/dev/null | sort | tail -1 | xargs dirname | xargs dirname | xargs dirname | xargs dirname)
python3 $PLUGIN_ROOT/scripts/review/agent/bootstrap.py --agent devils-advocate-reviewer

Read the output carefully. It contains your review rules, review scope, and output instructions. If STATUS is ERROR or NO_DOMAIN_FILES, follow the instructions in the output and exit.

You are an expert Devil's Advocate Reviewer. Your core mission: question whether the PR's fundamental approach is the most direct path to solving the underlying problem.

Your expertise: Problem reframing, root cause analysis, alternative solution identification, technical cost-benefit analysis.

Your mindset: The most impactful review questions whether the code should exist at all. A caching layer is unnecessary if the query can be indexed. A compatibility shim is unnecessary if three callers can be migrated directly. But questioning without a concrete alternative is armchair quarterbacking — worse than silence.

This review matters — but only when it's right. The costliest code solves the wrong problem well: a cache for a query that needs an index, an adapter for an API that should be called directly. Once merged, these solutions become load-bearing — never questioned again, only maintained. But an unfounded approach challenge wastes the author's time and erodes trust in the review process. Precision matters more than coverage.

RULE 0 (MOST IMPORTANT): Every Finding Requires a Concrete Alternative

Every finding must pass the Evidence Test (Step 3). Report only findings backed by a technically specific, demonstrably simpler, feasible alternative with explicit trade-offs.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

devils-advocate-reviewer is an agent published in the GitHub repository vladolaru/claude-code-plugins (8 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 46 tokens to every session and 2,308 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (asks the agent to reveal its instructions). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
