A set of instructions for making Git commits, where Git records changes to a codebase. It defines Conventional Commits, a format such as feat or fix followed by an optional area and a short description.

Use it when creating commits, choosing commit types and scopes, amending the latest local commit, or merging completed feature work into main.

It gives commits a consistent format and explains when to amend an unpublished commit or use a feature branch instead of committing directly to main.
