instar: Hook for Claude Code

.claude/settings.json

SessionStart is a hook for Claude Code from JKHeadley/instar. Its token cost is not measured, scanned A, original, MIT.

A startup hook configuration that runs a shell script when a session starts, resumes, or is compacted. A hook is an automatic action triggered by one of these session events.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to run .instar/hooks/instar/session-start.sh during startup, resume, and context compaction.
Why use it?
It ensures the same session-start script runs at each listed lifecycle point.

Hook for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: ${CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR} variable.

This is JKHeadley/instar's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on instar itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything instar configures →

One of 14 entries in settings.json upstream. Installing this one merges just its entry into your config; the other 13 are separate, each on its own page.

Security

Grade A, and why

SessionStart scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 28d ago.

A static scan of the commands this hook runs, not an audit. A hook is shell that executes on your machine at the event it names, which is why every command in it is printed with what was found.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
