reuse-before-generate: Instructions file for Gemini CLI

GEMINI.md

reuse-before-generate GEMINI.md is an instructions file for Gemini CLI from aradar46/reuse-before-generate. It costs 1,059 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for reuse-before-generate, an MCP server tool that checks whether existing open-source projects or commercial products already address an idea before new code is generated. It searches sources such as GitHub, npm, crates.io, GitLab, Show HN, and web search.

In plain words
What is it for?
Researching existing software before scaffolding an application or module, finding libraries and open-source building blocks, and identifying commercial products with similar functionality.
Why use it?
Coding agents may start building something that already exists or overlook competing products. The tool organizes discovery evidence into reusable projects and products to compare against.

Instructions file for Gemini CLI

Written for Gemini CLI: the file is GEMINI.md. Also seen: mentions Gemini CLI.

This is aradar46/reuse-before-generate's own configuration. It tells Gemini CLI how to work on reuse-before-generate itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything reuse-before-generate configures →

Not installable: its command points at a path on the author’s own machine, so it runs nowhere else. The line is /home/adr/.gemini/antigravity-ide/mcp_config.json.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01059 $0.01059
Opus 5 $0.00530 $0.00530
Sonnet 5 $0.00212 $0.00212
Haiku 4.5 $0.00106 $0.00106

Security

Grade A, and why

reuse-before-generate GEMINI.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

GEMINI.md — Project Context & Agent Guidelines for reuse-before-generate

This file provides workspace context, architecture rules, and current audit state for AI assistants (Gemini / Antigravity) working in this repository.

1. Project Mission & Core Philosophy

reuse-before-generate is an MCP server tool (check_before_building) built to prevent AI coding agents from blindly scaffolding new projects or substantial modules from scratch when maintained open-source projects or competing products already exist.

  • Key Insight: AI pair-programmers often validate redundant user ideas ("Great idea! Let me build a pet health app from scratch!"). This tool intercepts the workflow before code generation begins, searching GitHub, npm, crates.io, GitLab, Show HN, and Tavily web search.
  • Output Structure: Deliberately separates returned evidence into two distinct sections:
    1. Projects you could reuse (open-source repositories, packages, building blocks)
    2. Products you would compete with (commercial product homepages & SaaS evidence)
  • Lean Discovery Architecture: Telemetry, energy tracking, and persistent install ID tracking have been completely stripped from the codebase to keep the server lean, fast, and 100% focused on pure candidate discovery.

2. Git & Repository Management Rules

[!IMPORTANT] Private Default Remote: Future updates must NOT be pushed to the public repository by default. All development commits MUST be pushed to the private repository (origin).

  • Default Remote (origin): https://github.com/aradar46/reuse-before-generate-private.git (Private Repository)
    • All development, commits, and new versions beyond the v0.10.0 public baseline are strictly private and MUST be pushed to origin.
  • Public Baseline Remote (public): https://github.com/aradar46/reuse-before-generate.git (Public Repository)
    • Contains open-source v0.10.0 baseline (git release v0.2.3 tag). Do NOT push to public without explicit user instructions.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
