api-design

api-design is a cursor rule for Cursor from GoranErhartic/cursor-development-rules. It costs 63 tokens per session (1,697 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

Guidelines for designing REST APIs: web endpoints that use standard HTTP requests to work with resources such as users or orders. They cover naming, methods, response codes, pagination, filtering, versioning, and safe retries.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when defining resource URLs, choosing GET or POST, returning success and error responses, adding pagination, or versioning an API.
Why use it?
They help APIs behave predictably for the applications and services that call them.

Getting it into your agent

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00063 $0.01697
Opus 5 $0.00032 $0.00848
Sonnet 5 $0.00013 $0.00339
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00170

Measured yesterday against content hash 8449c7b859ce, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

api-design scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

API Design Principles

RESTful Conventions

Resource Naming

  • Use plural nouns for collections: /users, /orders
  • Use lowercase with hyphens for readability: /user-profiles
  • Nest resources to show relationships: /users/{userId}/orders
  • Keep URLs short and intuitive
  • Avoid verbs in URLs (use HTTP methods instead)

Examples

GET /users # Get all users
GET /users/{id} # Get specific user
POST /users # Create user
PUT /users/{id} # Update user (full replacement)
PATCH /users/{id} # Partial update
DELETE /users/{id} # Delete user

HTTP Methods & Status Codes

Operation Method Success Error Cases
Get single item GET 200 OK 404 Not Found
Get collection GET 200 OK (empty array if none)
Create POST 201 Created 400 Bad Request, 409 Conflict
Full update PUT 200 OK or 204 No Content 404 Not Found, 400 Bad Request
Partial update PATCH 200 OK 404 Not Found, 400 Bad Request
Delete DELETE 204 No Content 404 Not Found

Status Code Guidelines

2xx Success

  • 200 OK - Request succeeded, response has body
  • 201 Created - Resource created, include Location header
  • 204 No Content - Request succeeded, no response body

3xx Redirection

  • 301 Moved Permanently - Resource permanently moved
  • 302 Found - Temporary redirect
  • 304 Not Modified - Resource not modified (caching)

4xx Client Errors

  • 400 Bad Request - Invalid syntax or validation failure
  • 401 Unauthorized - Authentication required or failed
  • 403 Forbidden - Authenticated but not authorized
  • 404 Not Found - Resource doesn't exist
  • 409 Conflict - Request conflicts with current state (duplicate)
  • 422 Unprocessable Entity - Validation errors
  • 429 Too Many Requests - Rate limit exceeded

5xx Server Errors

  • 500 Internal Server Error - Unexpected server error
  • 502 Bad Gateway - Invalid response from upstream
  • 503 Service Unavailable - Temporarily unavailable
  • 504 Gateway Timeout - Upstream timeout

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
