research-slides-authoring

research-slides-authoring is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from a-attia/scicomp-research-skills. It costs 171 tokens per session (2,832 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for creating, revising, and checking research talks and posters. It focuses on the message, evidence, and visible result across formats such as Beamer, Marp, PowerPoint, Keynote, and reveal.js.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for conference talks, lab meetings, defences, invited talks, funder briefings, status updates, and research posters.
Why use it?
It helps prevent slides that are technically complete but unclear to people who have not read the project. It checks the rendered presentation rather than only the source files.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00171 $0.02832
Opus 5.5 $0.00068 $0.01133
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00034 $0.00566
Haiku 4.5 $0.00017 $0.00283

Security

Grade A, and why

research-slides-authoring scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 22d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/audit-pages.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

When to load this skill

Load before creating, revising or reviewing anything that will be presented rather than read at a desk: a talk deck, a poster, a status or funder briefing, a defense, a lab-meeting update. Load it for small requests too ("fix this slide", "make the figure fit", "add a slide about X"). The failures this skill prevents happen most often on small edits, because a small edit feels too small to check.

It is toolchain-agnostic. Every audit rule is stated against the rendered PDF, which every toolchain produces. Toolchain specifics live in references/toolchain-beamer.md and references/toolchain-marp.md.

This is not a file-format skill. A pptx skill handles reading and writing .pptx files. This skill decides what goes on the slides and checks that it arrived. For a PowerPoint deck, load both.

The governing test

Could someone who has not read the project, glancing up from their phone, restate this slide's point?

A deck is not a project directory with page breaks. Every rule below serves this test.

The four principles

  1. Argue, don't file. A deck makes a claim and builds evidence for it. The order of the work plan is not an argument.
  2. Write for someone who is not you. The audience has not read the repository, does not share its vocabulary, and was not in the room when decisions were made.
  3. Form carries meaning. Colour, size, position, grouping and repetition each say something. Use them on purpose, consistently.
  4. Look, don't assume. A clean build proves the source compiled. It says nothing about whether the slide is right. Render it and look.

Workflow and gates

Phase Output Gate
1. Discovery Answers to one batch of questions Nothing asked that could have been read
2. Brief notes/talk_brief.md, one screen User approves
3. Plan notes/talk_plan.md: claim, beats, one line per slide User approves
4. Draft The deck Build succeeds
5. Audit Rendered pages checked After every visual edit, not once at the end
6. Distribute PDF delivered, location stated Privacy pass if shared publicly

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
