cso

cso is a skill for Claude Code from Abilityai/abilities. It costs 47 tokens per session (1,567 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A security audit workflow that checks either recent branch changes or the entire codebase. It looks for exposed secrets, unsafe dependencies, weak authentication boundaries, injection risks, and platform-specific security problems.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review a pull request, investigate security-sensitive changes, or perform a wider audit before a major release. It saves reports in the project's security-reports folder.
Why use it?
It helps find common security weaknesses before they reach users or production. Scanning only changed code supports quick checks, while scanning the full codebase gives broader coverage.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00047 $0.01567
Opus 5.5 $0.00019 $0.00627
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00313
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00157

Security

Grade A, and why

cso scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Runs shell commandslowCapability

Expected in a hook, worth knowing in a rule or an instructions file.

CSO Security Audit

ℹ️ First, set expectations: before anything else, print one short line with this skill's version and its most recent change — the top entry of metadata.changelog above — e.g. cso vX.Y — recent: <summary>. Then proceed.

Run a security audit in Chief Security Officer mode. Two scopes available:

  • --diff — scans changes on the current branch vs base. Fast, recommended for every P0/P1 PR.
  • --comprehensive — scans the full codebase. Slower, recommended weekly or before major releases.

State Dependencies

Source Location Read Write Description
Git diff current branch ✅ Branch changes (--diff mode)
Source code src/ ✅ Full codebase (--comprehensive mode)
Architecture docs/memory/architecture.md ✅ Auth boundaries, integration points
Dependencies requirements.txt, package.json, etc. ✅ Dependency inventory
Security reports docs/security-reports/ ✅ Saved output

Arguments

  • --diff — scope to branch changes only (default if no argument provided)
  • --comprehensive — scope to full codebase

Process

Step 1: Determine Scope

# --diff mode
git diff main...HEAD

# --comprehensive mode
find src/ -type f -name "*.py" -o -name "*.ts" -o -name "*.js"

Step 2: Secrets Scan

Scan for hardcoded credentials in scope:

# API keys and tokens
grep -rE '(sk-[a-zA-Z0-9]{20,}|ghp_[a-zA-Z0-9]{36}|AKIA[A-Z0-9]{16})' [scope]

# Generic secrets pattern
grep -rE '(password|secret|token|api_key)\s*[=:]\s*["'"'"'][^"'"'"'\$]{8,}["'"'"']' [scope] | grep -v 'example\|placeholder\|test\|dummy'

# .env files in diff
git diff --name-only | grep -E '^\.env$|\.env\.[^e]' | grep -v example

Severity: CRITICAL

Step 3: Dependency Audit

Check for known-vulnerable packages:

# Python
pip-audit 2>/dev/null || safety check 2>/dev/null || echo "No pip-audit/safety available"

# Node
npm audit --json 2>/dev/null || yarn audit --json 2>/dev/null || echo "No npm/yarn audit available"

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

cso is a skill published in the GitHub repository Abilityai/abilities (12 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 47 tokens to every session and 1,567 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (runs shell commands). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-07.
