speckit-specify

speckit-specify is a skill for Claude Code from aboalrejal-ai/skills. It costs 19 tokens per session (3,570 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of speckit-specify, MIT.

A feature-specification workflow that turns a natural-language feature request into a written description of the feature. It can also update an existing specification.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when starting or revising a feature specification from a user's description. In projects with extension hooks, it checks the configured hooks before creating the specification.
Why use it?
It gives a vague request a consistent written form before implementation, including any configured pre-specification checks.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00019 $0.03570
Opus 5 $0.00010 $0.01785
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00714
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00357

Security

Grade A, and why

speckit-specify scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

User Input

$ARGUMENTS

You MUST consider the user input before proceeding (if not empty).

Pre-Execution Checks

Check for extension hooks (before specification):

  • Check if .specify/extensions.yml exists in the project root.
  • If it exists, read it and look for entries under the hooks.before_specify key
  • If the YAML cannot be parsed or is invalid, skip hook checking silently and continue normally
  • Filter out hooks where enabled is explicitly false. Treat hooks without an enabled field as enabled by default.
  • For each remaining hook, do not attempt to interpret or evaluate hook condition expressions:
    • If the hook has no condition field, or it is null/empty, treat the hook as executable
    • If the hook defines a non-empty condition, skip the hook and leave condition evaluation to the HookExecutor implementation
  • For each executable hook, output the following based on its optional flag:
    • Optional hook (optional: true):
      ## Extension Hooks

      **Optional Pre-Hook**: {extension}
      Command: `/{command}`
      Description: {description}

      Prompt: {prompt}
      To execute: `/{command}`

    • Mandatory hook (optional: false):
      ## Extension Hooks

      **Automatic Pre-Hook**: {extension}
      Executing: `/{command}`
      EXECUTE_COMMAND: {command}

      Wait for the result of the hook command before proceeding to the Outline.

  • If no hooks are registered or .specify/extensions.yml does not exist, skip silently

Outline

The text the user typed after /speckit.specify in the triggering message is the feature description. Assume you always have it available in this conversation even if $ARGUMENTS appears literally below. Do not ask the user to repeat it unless they provided an empty command.

Given that feature description, do this:

  1. Generate a concise short name (2-4 words) for the feature:
    • Analyze the feature description and extract the most meaningful keywords
    • Create a 2-4 word short name that captures the essence of the feature
    • Use action-noun format when possible (e.g., "add-user-auth", "fix-payment-bug")
    • Preserve technical terms and acronyms (OAuth2, API, JWT, etc.)
    • Keep it concise but descriptive enough to understand the feature at a glance
    • Examples:
      • "I want to add user authentication" → "user-auth"
      • "Implement OAuth2 integration for the API" → "oauth2-api-integration"
      • "Create a dashboard for analytics" → "analytics-dashboard"
      • "Fix payment processing timeout bug" → "fix-payment-timeout"

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
