browser-cdp

browser-cdp is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from adolfousier/opencrabs. It costs 36 tokens per session (556 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A browser automation tool that controls Chrome through its built-in developer interface. It can open pages, click and type, wait for content, run JavaScript, extract page content, and take screenshots, with or without a visible window.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for browser-based testing, scraping visible page content, filling forms, inspecting interactive elements, running page scripts, and capturing screenshots.
Why use it?
It lets developers automate browser tasks without adding Node.js or Playwright. It is useful when a task requires interacting with a live web page rather than only downloading its source.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00036 $0.00556
Opus 5 $0.00018 $0.00278
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00111
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00056

Security

Grade A, and why

browser-cdp scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Native Browser Automation (CDP)

Built-in browser control via Chrome DevTools Protocol — no Node.js, no Playwright, pure Rust.

Tools

Tool Required Optional What
browser_navigate url headless Navigate to URL
browser_click selector Click element by CSS selector
browser_type text selector Type text into input
browser_screenshot selector Screenshot (returns file path)
browser_eval script Execute JavaScript
browser_content selector, text_only Extract text/HTML
browser_wait selector, timeout_secs, delay_secs Wait for element or delay
browser_find pattern, mode, limit Inventory (no pattern) or find elements

Headless vs Headed

  • Headless (default): No visible window. Fast, low resources.
  • Headed: Visible Chrome window. Pass headless: false to browser_navigate.

Usage Tips

  • Compose workflows: navigate → inventory/find → click → type → screenshot
  • Inventory mode: call browser_find with NO pattern to get every visible interactive element on the page, each with a stable [data-opencrabs-match="N"] selector. Prefer this over browser_screenshot when you have just landed and do not yet know what to click — text beats pixels for deciding where to act.
  • Screenshots return file paths. Use <<IMG:path>> to send to channels.
  • JavaScript evaluation for complex DOM manipulation and SPAs.
  • No credentials stored. Navigate to login page and use click/type for auth (with user approval).
  • Requires Chrome/Chromium installed. Feature-gated: browser flag.

Chrome Launch Failures

  1. SingletonLock exists: rm -f ~/.opencrabs/chrome-profile/SingletonLock ~/.opencrabs/chrome-profile/SingletonCookie ~/.opencrabs/chrome-profile/SingletonSocket then retry.
  2. DevTools data dir conflict: pkill -f chrome then retry.
  3. Channel closed: Kill Chrome, delete lock files, retry.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
