earthquake-catalog

earthquake-catalog is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from agentlas-ai/agentlas-desktop. It costs 34 tokens per session (490 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A workflow for retrieving and normalizing a bounded USGS earthquake catalogue, including event locations, pagination records, and source provenance.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps collect earthquake events for maps, tables, and compatible statistical or visualization tools, with optional inspection of individual event details.
Why use it?
It prevents a single result page from being mistaken for the full catalogue and keeps missing values and location-quality warnings explicit.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00034 $0.00490
Opus 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00196
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00098
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00049

Security

Grade A, and why

earthquake-catalog scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 28 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Earthquake catalog

  1. Choose an explicit UTC interval of at most 366 days. Add a bounding box only when the study area is defined.
  2. Use offset and the returned pagination.nextOffset for bounded continuation; do not silently treat a full page as the complete population.
  3. Call search_usgs_earthquakes; for user-downloaded USGS data call normalize_usgs_earthquake_geojson instead.
  4. When a candidate event needs quality assessment, call get_usgs_event_detail with the exact event id. Use normalize_usgs_event_detail_geojson for a downloaded detail Feature.
  5. Preserve the returned provenance receipt, normalized hash, warnings, query, quality coverage, pagination, and event count with the artifact.
  6. Treat observations[].quality values nst, gap, dmin, and rms as location-quality diagnostics. events[] is the stable legacy map projection. Prefer event-detail origin uncertainty for inferential use; never invent a confidence level when USGS does not provide one.
  7. Use GeoJSON for an installed MapLibre/Cesium lab, or the canonical tables for an installed Vega/statistics lab. If a renderer is absent, keep the source artifact and report that boundary.

Outputs

  • A backward-compatible deterministic agentlas.earth.usgs-earthquake-catalog/v1 catalog carrying contract revision quality-pagination-detail-compatible/v2, or an agentlas.earth.usgs-earthquake-event-detail/v1 detail object.
  • Canonical 3D GeoJSON, typed parameter/product tables, and a source receipt with request/raw/normalized SHA-256 values.

Verification

  • The source provider is USGS and at most 2,000 events are present.
  • Every feature is a finite longitude/latitude/depth point with a unique USGS event id.
  • A full page is continued or explicitly reported as potentially incomplete.
  • Detail uncertainty units remain explicit: time in seconds, horizontal/vertical error in kilometers, ellipse axes in meters, angular errors in degrees.
  • The artifact hash equals provenance.normalizedSha256 and the raw response hash remains separate.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

earthquake-catalog is a skill published in the GitHub repository agentlas-ai/agentlas-desktop (6 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 34 tokens to every session and 490 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-04.
