gutenberg-richter-analysis

gutenberg-richter-analysis is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from agentlas-ai/agentlas-desktop. It costs 50 tokens per session (404 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A workflow for estimating the Gutenberg–Richter b-value from a complete USGS earthquake catalogue. The b-value describes how the number of earthquakes changes with magnitude.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps analyze the observed magnitude–frequency relationship with an explicit completeness threshold, bin width, audit table, and figure.
Why use it?
It prevents incomplete downloads, mixed magnitude types, and unchosen completeness thresholds from distorting the estimate.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00050 $0.00404
Opus 5.5 $0.00020 $0.00162
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00081
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00040

Security

Grade A, and why

gutenberg-richter-analysis scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Gutenberg–Richter analysis

Use this workflow only for a bounded magnitude–frequency analysis of observed USGS ComCat events.

  1. Retrieve a USGS catalog with search_usgs_earthquakes. Use offset 1 and narrow the UTC window or rectangular region until pagination.nextOffset is null and pagination.completeness is page-complete.
  2. Ask the researcher for the magnitude-completeness threshold Mc, the magnitude discretization ΔM (normally the catalog precision), and the single magnitude type to analyze. Never infer Mc or convert magnitude scales.
  3. Call analyze_usgs_gutenberg_richter with the exact returned catalog. Do not reconstruct its provenance fields or hashes.
  4. Inspect selection and the complete eventAuditTable before interpreting the estimate. Missing magnitudes remain explicit nulls; magnitude-type mismatches and sub-Mc events are separate exclusion reasons.
  5. Use publicationTable for numerical reporting and vegaLite for the magnitude–frequency figure. Keep the raw-response, normalized-catalog, table, figure, and analysis hashes with the result.

The estimator is b=log10(e)/(mean(M)-(Mc-ΔM/2)). Report the asymptotic Aki standard error and normal confidence interval as such. This workflow fails below 50 included events, below three occupied magnitude bins, for incomplete pagination, or for values not aligned to the declared magnitude grid.

This workflow does not estimate completeness, decluster aftershocks, test spatial stationarity, convert magnitude scales, perform bootstrap uncertainty, or support forecast and causal claims. Those limitations belong in any manuscript methods and limitations sections.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

gutenberg-richter-analysis is a skill published in the GitHub repository agentlas-ai/agentlas-desktop (6 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 50 tokens to every session and 404 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-04.
