create-migration

A workflow for creating and managing Entity Framework Core database migrations, which are versioned instructions for changing a database’s structure and initial data.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when changing EF Core entities or a DbContext, adding seed data, applying updates, removing migrations, or resolving migration conflicts.
Why use it?
It helps apply model changes safely, review possible data loss, roll back changes, and keep database history with the code.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00055 $0.00481
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00241
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00096
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00048

Security

Grade A, and why

create-migration scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Create EF Migration

Create, review, and apply Entity Framework Core migrations safely.

Workflow

  1. Make entity/model changes in code
  2. Generate migration with a descriptive name
  3. Review the generated migration — verify no unintended column drops or data loss
  4. Apply to local database and verify
  5. Commit migration files with the related entity changes

Creating Migrations

# Generate a new migration (from the project directory containing the DbContext)
dotnet ef migrations add AddInvoiceLineItems --project src/MyApp.Data --startup-project src/MyApp.Api

# Apply to local database
dotnet ef database update --project src/MyApp.Data --startup-project src/MyApp.Api

# Rollback to a previous migration
dotnet ef database update PreviousMigrationName --project src/MyApp.Data --startup-project src/MyApp.Api

# Remove the last unapplied migration
dotnet ef migrations remove --project src/MyApp.Data --startup-project src/MyApp.Api

Best Practices

  • Descriptive names: AddInvoiceLineItems, RenameUserEmailToContactEmail — never Update1
  • Small and focused: One schema change per migration for easier rollback
  • Seed data: Use HasData() in OnModelCreating or IEntityTypeConfiguration<T>, not raw SQL in migrations
  • Review before applying: Check the generated Up() and Down() methods for unintended drops or data loss
  • Test locally: Always apply against a local database before committing

Checklist

  • Migration has a descriptive, intention-revealing name
  • Generated Up() and Down() methods reviewed for correctness
  • No unintended column drops or data loss
  • Migration applied successfully to local database
  • Seed data uses HasData(), not raw SQL
  • Migration files committed alongside entity changes
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

create-migration is a skill published in the GitHub repository andresharpe/dotbot (54 stars, last pushed 5d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 55 tokens to every session and 481 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
