SME Operations (pricing, break-even, cash, KPIs)
Cash first — profit second
SMEs die of cash, not of losses. A profitable business with 60-day receivables and 30-day payables funds its own growth out of pocket and can fail while the P&L looks fine. Every operational decision (pricing, terms, inventory, hiring) gets checked against the cash forecast before the margin math.

cash conversion cycle = days inventory + days receivable − days payable
A 13-week rolling cash forecast is the core instrument: weekly buckets, actual opening balance, committed inflows (invoices by expected — not due — date), committed outflows (payroll, rent, tax, suppliers), updated weekly against actuals. Taxes (VAT, payroll withholding) are the classic omission: cash that sits in the account but is already owed.
Pricing and margin structure
gross margin % = (price − direct cost) / price ← margin is on PRICE
markup % = (price − direct cost) / direct cost ← markup is on COST
price for target margin m: price = direct cost / (1 − m)
Confusing markup with margin understates price systematically (50% markup = 33% margin). Direct cost must be fully loaded: materials, direct labor at true hourly cost (wages + taxes + benefits), payment fees, shipping, returns/spoilage. Cost-plus is the floor; price to value where the market allows, and test — SMEs almost universally underprice, and a price rise loses less volume than owners fear. Rule of thumb: a business with healthy demand and zero complaints about price is priced too low.
Break-even
contribution margin per unit = price − variable cost per unit
break-even units = fixed costs / contribution margin per unit
break-even revenue = fixed costs / contribution margin %
Classify costs honestly: rent, salaries, insurance, software = fixed; materials, transaction fees, commissions, freight = variable. Semi-fixed steps (the next hire, the next machine) create a new break-even — recompute at each step, don't average across it. Use break-even for decisions: new hire = added fixed cost ÷ contribution margin = extra units needed; can the pipeline deliver that?
