python-tooling

python-tooling is a skill for Claude Code from AratKruglik/claude-sdlc. It costs 194 tokens per session (2,231 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to Python project tools such as package managers, virtual environments, lockfiles, formatting, linting, type checking, and command-line entry points. It uses pyproject.toml as the main project configuration file.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to install dependencies, manage environments, configure packaging, run formatters and linters, check types, and define console commands.
Why use it?
It helps identify the project's existing toolchain and prevents mixing incompatible installation or quality-checking workflows.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00194 $0.02231
Opus 5.5 $0.00078 $0.00892
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00039 $0.00446
Haiku 4.5 $0.00019 $0.00223

Security

Grade A, and why

python-tooling scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Python Tooling (stack-agnostic)

pyproject.toml is the single source of truth for a modern Python project. Read it before doing anything else — it tells you the Python version, the package manager, the linting config, and the test settings.

Detection — which package manager is active

Check for lockfiles in this order:

test -f poetry.lock   && echo "Poetry"
test -f uv.lock       && echo "uv"
test -f Pipfile.lock  && echo "Pipenv"
test -f requirements.txt && echo "pip"
Signal Package manager Install command
poetry.lock Poetry poetry install
uv.lock uv uv sync
Pipfile.lock Pipenv pipenv install
requirements.txt only pip pip install -r requirements.txt

When only a pyproject.toml with a [build-system] section exists but no lockfile, check [build-system].requires to identify the build backend (setuptools, hatch, flit) and fall back to pip install -e ..

Always use the project's existing package manager. Do not mix managers (e.g., do not run pip install in a Poetry project).

pyproject.toml — canonical structure

A fully configured pyproject.toml for a PEP 621 project:

[project]

[project.optional-dependencies]
dev = [
    "pytest>=8.0",
    "pytest-cov>=5.0",
    "ruff>=0.4",
    "mypy>=1.10",
]

[project.scripts]
myapp = "myapp.cli:main"

[build-system]
requires = ["hatchling"]
build-backend = "hatchling.build"

[tool.ruff]
line-length = 88

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

python-tooling is a skill published in the GitHub repository AratKruglik/claude-sdlc (53 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 194 tokens to every session and 2,231 once invoked, about $0.0008 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
