minipainter

minipainter is a skill for Claude Code from ArturSkowronski/minipainter. It costs 91 tokens per session (944 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of minipainter, MIT.

A command-line tool for searching hobby paints, matching colors across brands, and tracking which paints you own. It covers brands such as Citadel, Army Painter, Vallejo, and AK Interactive.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to find paints, inspect paint details, identify close alternatives to a color, and check or update your collection.
Why use it?
It avoids manually comparing paint catalogs or remembering your inventory. Color matching starts from either a hex color code or a written description.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00091 $0.00944
Opus 5 $0.00046 $0.00472
Sonnet 5 $0.00018 $0.00189
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00094

Security

Grade A, and why

minipainter scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (assets/app.js, assets/paints.js), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 88 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

minipainter

Drive the minipainter CLI for paint search, cross-brand color matching, and inventory tracking. Always pass --json on reads and parse the JSON — never scrape the human-formatted text, and never branch on the exit code for "found vs not" (see Failure handling).

Install

If minipainter is not installed:

# runs straight from npm, no install needed
npx minipainter paint search bone

# or install once for the short `mpaint` command everywhere
npm install -g minipainter

Verify with mpaint paint search bone (or the npx form above).

Invoking the CLI

Use the first form that resolves; do not assume a repo checkout:

  1. mpaint <args> — installed globally or on PATH.
  2. npx minipainter <args> — installed from npm, no checkout.
  3. node src/cli.mjs <args> — run from inside a repo checkout.

There is no --help; an unknown command prints Unknown command and exits 1.

Commands (add --json to every read)

Intent Command
Search the catalog mpaint paint search "<query>" --json
Inspect one paint mpaint paint show "<name>" --json
Nearest paints to a color mpaint match color "#RRGGBB" --json
Nearest paints to words mpaint match describe "<description>" --json
List owned paints mpaint inventory list --json
Mark owned (write) mpaint inventory own "<name>"
Mark unowned (write) mpaint inventory unowned "<name>"

Reads (search, show, match, list) are side-effect-free — run them freely. Full flags, JSON shapes, and env vars are in references/commands.md.

Rules

  • Writes mutate the user's inventory at ~/.minipainting/inventory.json (own / unowned). Confirm the exact paint first. To operate on a throwaway or project-scoped inventory instead, set INVENTORY_PATH=/path/to/inventory.json.
  • Cross-brand "is this the same kind of paint?" → read product_format, never infer type from the name, RGB, or usage_roles. Values: opaque_base, opaque_layer, wash, contrast, technical, drybrush, metallic.
  • Owned paints sort first in match/search results — when recommending, prefer what the user already owns before suggesting a new pot.
  • color_families is a rough color bucket for browsing only; do not use it to reason about paint type.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
