parse-or-reject

parse-or-reject is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from arunveersingh/ai. It costs 100 tokens per session (659 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A practice guide for making programs reject model output that does not exactly match an expected data shape. It uses a refund example to show why parsed text can still contain wrong values.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for defining required fields and allowed values, preserving the original text, allowing an explicit null when information is absent, and validating replies before code uses them.
Why use it?
It prevents malformed or ambiguous model replies from silently becoming incorrect amounts, missing values, or unsafe actions.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one. Also seen: mentions subagents.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00100 $0.00659
Opus 5.5 $0.00040 $0.00264
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00020 $0.00132
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00066

Security

Grade A, and why

parse-or-reject scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 14d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (validate.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 46 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Parse or reject

A model reads refund emails and drafts refunds. The email says "1.250,00 EUR"; the reply copies it; the code strips the comma and refunds 1.25. Another email has no amount; .get("amount", "0") drafts a zero refund. No error either time.

Parsed is not valid. If your code can always turn the reply into a value, it will turn a wrong reply into a wrong value. The fix: the model writes, a validator decides.

Part A — Ask (paste and adapt)

Reply with one JSON object and nothing else. Exactly these keys:
order_id: "A-" followed by digits, as written in the email
amount: like "1250.00" (dot decimal, two places, no separators), or null
currency: "EUR", "GBP" or "USD", or null
amount_text: the amount exactly as written in the email, or null
reason: "duplicate_charge", "not_received", "damaged" or "other"
If the email states no amount, amount, currency and amount_text are null.
Never estimate. A program checks this reply and rejects anything else.

In an orchestrated flow (spec → plan → tasks → implement): the schema and reject path go in the spec as requirements; the validator task comes before the prompt task. Validate agent replies your scripts act on (headless runs, subagent reports) the same way.

Part B — Validate (you do this)

validate.py has no dependencies. Adapt FIELDS to your output and keep its rules:

  1. Exact keys. Missing or extra keys reject.
  2. A format per value. A pattern or a fixed list, not just a type.
  3. Missing is null, never a default. A null record goes to a person.
  4. Tie values to the source. A quoted span must appear in the input.
  5. On reject: send the reply back once with the error list. Still rejected → a person. Never fix it up in code.
python3 validate.py reply.json email.txt # exit 0 accepted, 1 rejected

Limit: it checks only what you encode. A well-shaped, sourced misreading ("1.25" from "1.250,00 EUR") passes, so check money against your own records too.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

It adds 100 tokens to every session and 659 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-12.
