grafana

grafana is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ashish7802/awesome-api-skills. It costs 0 tokens per session (542 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for Grafana, a tool that displays data from sources such as Prometheus, Loki, or PostgreSQL in dashboards. It covers dashboard setup, alerts, provisioning, and production operation.

In plain words
What is it for?
For creating and maintaining Grafana dashboards, configuring alerts, provisioning them as code, and planning reliable deployments.
Why use it?
It helps developers understand how to organize monitoring data and alerts without relying only on manual dashboard setup.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.00542
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00271
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00108
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00054

Security

Grade A, and why

grafana scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

grafana -- "integrates with" --> loki
grafana -- "alternative to" --> datadog

Quick Start

Grafana connects to disparate data sources (Prometheus, Loki, Postgres) and visualizes them on highly customizable dashboards.

docker run -d -p 3000:3000 grafana/grafana

Production Patterns

Provisioning as Code

Do not click around the Grafana UI to create critical production dashboards. Use Grafana's File Provisioning system (JSON/YAML) or Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) to version control your dashboards and alerts.

Architecture & Scaling

Unified Alerting

Grafana handles alerting natively. Define alert rules directly on the dashboard panels. Ensure Grafana is connected to a Notification Channel like Slack, PagerDuty, or Discord to route critical anomalies immediately.

Error Recovery

If Grafana loses connection to its underlying database (SQLite by default, but should be Postgres in production), the UI will hang. Ensure high availability by clustering Grafana nodes backed by a managed PostgreSQL database.

Security Notes

Never expose Grafana to the public internet without enforcing SSO (Single Sign-On) via Google, GitHub, or Okta. Disable basic authentication (admin/admin) immediately upon provisioning.

Relationships

Alternatives: datadog

Works Well With: prometheus, loki

Why use this skill

Use this when your agent works with grafana — structured patterns beat pasted docs and prevent common hallucinations.

AI pitfalls

  • Using outdated SDK or API versions from training data
  • Inventing environment variable names
  • Omitting error handling and retry logic

Production checklist

  • Secrets in environment variables, not source code
  • Error handling and logging in place
  • Rate limits and timeouts configured

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

grafana is a skill published in the GitHub repository ashish7802/awesome-api-skills (13 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 542 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
