openid-connect

openid-connect is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ashish7802/awesome-api-skills. It costs 0 tokens per session (670 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to OpenID Connect (OIDC), an identity layer built on OAuth 2.0. OAuth 2.0 grants access to services, while OIDC verifies who a user or service is and provides an ID token containing that identity information.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to understand OIDC authentication, configure GitHub Actions to obtain short-lived cloud credentials, and apply common production patterns.
Why use it?
It helps separate access decisions from identity checks when building sign-in and service-to-service authentication. It also explains how OIDC relates to JWTs, OAuth 2.0, and GitHub Actions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.00670
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00335
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00134
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00067

Security

Grade A, and why

openid-connect scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Quick Start

While OAuth 2.0 is for Authorization (granting access to APIs), OIDC is for Authentication (verifying who the user is). It introduces the ID Token (a JWT).

Production Patterns

GitHub Actions OIDC

Never store long-lived AWS or GCP credentials in GitHub Actions secrets. Configure GitHub Actions as an OIDC Identity Provider in AWS/GCP. Your workflow requests a short-lived token verifying its repository identity, eliminating credential leakage.

Architecture & Scaling

ID Token vs Access Token

Do not send the ID Token to your backend API as proof of authorization. The ID Token is strictly for the frontend to know the user's name and email. The Access Token is what gets sent to the API in the Authorization header.

Error Recovery

Always validate the iss (Issuer) and aud (Audience) claims in the ID Token. If they do not match your exact OIDC provider and application client ID, instantly reject the token.

Security Notes

Fetch the provider's JWKS (JSON Web Key Set) dynamically to verify the ID token's cryptographic signature. Do not hardcode public keys, as identity providers rotate them frequently.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

openid-connect is a skill published in the GitHub repository ashish7802/awesome-api-skills (13 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 670 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
