new-task

new-task is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ashtonian/llm-init. It costs 7 tokens per session (265 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow for creating one documented development task in a project's backlog, the list of work waiting to be done.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create a numbered task file with its objective, priority, dependencies, steps, checks, and acceptance criteria, while also registering the task for execution.
Why use it?
It removes the need to remember the required task format, numbering, project rules, and verification details.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00007 $0.00265
Opus 5 $0.00003 $0.00133
Sonnet 5 $0.00001 $0.00053
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00026

Security

Grade A, and why

new-task scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Create a single task file in the backlog.

Instructions

  1. Read docs/spec/.llm/templates/task.template.md for the task format.
  2. Read .claude/rules/agent-guide.md for tech stack and quality gates.
  3. Determine the next task number by checking existing files in:
    • docs/spec/.llm/tasks/backlog/
    • docs/spec/.llm/tasks/in_progress/
    • docs/spec/.llm/tasks/completed/
    • docs/spec/.llm/tasks/blocked/
  4. Create the task file at docs/spec/.llm/tasks/backlog/NN-<slug>.md where:
    • NN is the zero-padded task number
    • <slug> is a short kebab-case description
  5. Also create a native task using TaskCreate with the same information.
  6. Fill in: Phase, Priority, Dependencies, Objective, Steps, Verification, and Acceptance Criteria.
  7. Verification commands should use the quality gates from the agent guide rules.
  8. Show the created task file to the user for review.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
