Agent Toolkit for AWS is a collection of AWS-supported MCP servers, skills, plugins, commands, and hooks that help AI coding agents build, deploy, and manage applications on AWS. It is used by developers working with AWS services through agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Kiro. The catalogue entries are the toolkit's own agent extensions for AWS development and operations.
Getting it into your agent
One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

What it costs to keep this loaded
Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.
| Model | Per session | Once invoked |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | $0.00142 | $0.01710 |
| Opus 5.5 | $0.00057 | $0.00684 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $0.00028 | $0.00342 |
| Haiku 4.5 | $0.00014 | $0.00171 |
Grade A, and why
amazon-ec2-image-builder scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.
A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.
Nothing flagged
None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.
How it starts
The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 83 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.
Amazon EC2 Image Builder
Overview
Domain expertise for building custom AMIs and container images with EC2 Image Builder — from the build IAM role through recipes, pipelines, distribution, and troubleshooting.
Works best with the AWS MCP server — recommended for sandboxed execution and audit logging. All guidance also works with standard AWS CLI access.
Guardrail — where this skill's own files live (MCP vs local install)
This skill can be loaded two ways, and they resolve the skill's own bundled files from different places. Determine how the skill was loaded before reading a reference or running a script:
- Loaded through the AWS MCP
retrieve_skilltool: The skill is not installed on the local filesystem. You MUST fetch each reference or script viaretrieve_skillwith thefileparameter (e.g.file="references/creating-images.md"), and use the returned content. Do NOTfile_readthese paths locally — they do not exist on disk. - Installed locally (e.g.
.kiro/skills/amazon-ec2-image-builder/or~/.claude/skills/amazon-ec2-image-builder/): Read files from the local skill directory using relative paths.
This distinction applies only to the skill's own packaged files. User data and
session artifacts are always read from and written to the user's working
directory. Never fetch or write user data through retrieve_skill.
First decision: one-off image or recurring pipeline
Ask this before creating anything — it changes what you build.
| The user wants | Do this |
|---|---|
| One custom AMI, once | Follow creating-images.md through step 7a: create-image with a recipe and infrastructure configuration — no pipeline needed. |
| A golden AMI that stays current (scheduled rebuilds that pick up base-image updates and patches) | An image pipeline: follow creating-images.md — the schedule is part of the create-image-pipeline call (step 7b). |
What ships with it
5 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.
What this file has done since we first saw it
Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

amazon-ec2-image-builder is a skill published in the GitHub repository aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws (2,886 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 142 tokens to every session and 1,710 once invoked, about $0.0006 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
