velocity.report: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/width-check/SKILL.md

width-check is a skill for Claude Code from banshee-data/velocity.report. It costs 37 tokens per session (760 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A check for Markdown prose lines longer than a chosen number of columns, normally 100. It ignores code blocks, tables, headings, and other listed non-prose content.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it across all Markdown files or on one file, with an optional stricter width, before a documentation-heavy merge or release.
Why use it?
It makes long documentation lines easier to review while remaining advisory, so a violation does not fail continuous integration or block a merge.

Skill for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: argument-hint in frontmatter.

This is banshee-data/velocity.report's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on velocity.report itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything velocity.report configures →

Needs its repository: it runs a file that does not travel with it, so clone the repository first. The line is python3 scripts/check-prose-line-width.py --report.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00037 $0.00760
Opus 5.5 $0.00015 $0.00304
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00152
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00076

Security

Grade A, and why

width-check scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Skill: width-check

Run the prose line-width check across all Markdown files (or a specific file) and report violations. Advisory only: this never blocks CI.

Usage

/width-check
/width-check README.md
/width-check docs/VISION.md
/width-check --width 80

What it checks

Running prose only. Excluded from the count:

  • Fenced code blocks (```)
  • Tables (|)
  • Headings (#)
  • Image references (![)
  • Link definitions ([label]:)
  • HTML comments (<!--)
  • Horizontal rules (---, ***)
  • Bold metadata lines (**key:**)

Two files are excluded entirely: CHANGELOG.md (register of list items) and docs/DECISIONS.md (single-line register entries with dense links).

The default limit is 100 columns. Pass --width 80 to check against a stricter limit (useful for ASCII art context).

Procedure

1. Run the check

make check-prose-width

Or directly:

python3 scripts/check-prose-line-width.py --report

For a single file:

python3 scripts/check-prose-line-width.py --report path/to/file.md

For a custom column limit:

python3 scripts/check-prose-line-width.py --report --width 80

2. Triage the output

For each violation, determine the category:

Category Action
Long URL in prose Acceptable. Move the URL to a link reference if it clutters the line.
List item that cannot wrap Acceptable. List items are excluded anyway; if it still appears, it is probably a prose paragraph that starts with a hyphen.
Blockquote prose line Fix: Prettier does not wrap blockquotes; break manually.
Genuine overlong sentence Fix: break the sentence or shorten it. Do not insert a hard newline mid-sentence purely to hit the column limit.
Pre-formatted prose in a non-fenced block Fix: either wrap or fence the block.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
