orientation

orientation is a skill for Claude Code from brainets/braina. It costs 158 tokens per session (2,083 once invoked), scanned A, original, BSD-3-Clause.

A decision guide for choosing tools for electrophysiology and brain-imaging data such as EEG, MEG, fMRI, and neural recordings. It turns a plain-language research question into a shortlist of possible analyses.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect data, decide between Frites connectivity and higher-order interaction methods, and select a suitable next tool or topic guide.
Why use it?
Researchers may not know whether their question needs pairwise connectivity or an analysis of interactions among three or more signals. The guide helps narrow that choice before detailed parameter work.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00158 $0.02083
Opus 5.5 $0.00063 $0.00833
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00032 $0.00417
Haiku 4.5 $0.00016 $0.00208

Security

Grade A, and why

orientation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 29d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Braina orientation: picking the right tool

A decision aid, not a reference manual. Turn a plain-language question into a ranked shortlist of candidate MCP tools, each with a one-line reason and a one-line tradeoff - never a single forced answer. Once the user picks a direction, hand off to the topic skill (frites-connectivity, hoi-metrics, workflows) for parameter-level detail. Worked examples per tool: references/examples.md next to this file.

Step 0 - get the data in, then look at it

  • Not .nc/.npy yet (MNE .fif epochs, MATLAB .mat, .csv)? Use convert_to_nc; it also attaches roi names, times/sfreq to a bare .npy. Coordinates must be named roi and times for Frites to keep labels - the converter does that.
  • Run inspect_data first: "how many signals, how many trials, is there a y variable, is there a time axis" settles half the triage.
  • No real data yet? frites_sim_ar (with random_state) gives synthetic data with known directed interactions to sanity-check a pipeline.
  • After any tool: plot_result writes a PNG; look at it before interpreting numbers.

Step 1 - how many signals are asked about, jointly?

  • Two (or many pairs, one at a time) -> Frites, Step 2.
  • Three or more as one group (the group's structure is the question) -> HOI, Step 3.
  • Unsure / exploratory -> start pairwise on a couple of pairs, or run hoi_oinfo over all regions with maxsize=3 and rank with hoi_get_nbest_mult (needs .nc output) to see which triplets stand out.

Step 2 - Frites: pairwise questions

2a. "Does A drive B?" (directed)

  1. frites_conn_covgc - covariance-based Granger causality, per trial, time-resolved; the established default (Brovelli 2004, 2015). Default method='gc' copula-normalises (robust to monotonic nonlinearities). Tradeoff: needs dt/lag/t0 choices; still a Gaussian-copula dependency assumption. Follow with frites_conn_net for A->B minus B->A.
  2. frites_conn_te - transfer entropy scanned over delays, across trials. Tradeoff: same estimator family (not fully non-parametric), noisier, needs many trials.
  3. frites_conn_fit - feature-specific information transfer: which task feature is transferred. Tradeoff: needs a well-defined y.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

orientation is a skill published in the GitHub repository brainets/braina (5 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed BSD-3-Clause. It adds 158 tokens to every session and 2,083 once invoked, about $0.0006 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-14.
