openai-gpt-image

openai-gpt-image is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from calesthio/generative-media-skills. It costs 124 tokens per session (7,598 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to OpenAI’s GPT Image models for creating and editing still images from text or reference images. It explains the available API workflows, image masks, streaming, and production review.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for generating illustrations or other still images, editing supplied images, compositing multiple inputs, and building image features into an application.
Why use it?
It helps developers choose the correct image workflow and avoid routing video, speech, or other media tasks through an image service.

SkillSpector: 2 findings, up to high

These are SkillSpector’s own severities. On a checked sample its high-severity flags on skills were ~96% false positives — a documented command, a public API, a “never do X” rule — so we show them as a caution to read, not a verdict. Why →

  • high YARA Match · line 3
YARA rule matched a hack tool or exploit indicator (offensive tools, reconnaissance, privilege escalation, or exploit frameworks).
Fix: Remove offensive tool references and exploit code. Legitimate agent skills should not contain penetration testing tools, exploit frameworks, or reconnaissance utilities.
  • medium Excessive Agency · line 447
Skill enables autonomous high-impact decisions without human-in-the-loop verification. Critical operations (destructive commands, financial transactions, data deletion) should require explicit user confirmation.
Fix: Add human-in-the-loop confirmation for destructive, irreversible, or high-impact operations. Never auto-execute commands that modify files, send data, or alter system state.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00124 $0.07598
Opus 5 $0.00062 $0.03799
Sonnet 5 $0.00025 $0.01520
Haiku 4.5 $0.00012 $0.00760

Security

Grade A, and why

openai-gpt-image scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Produce still images with OpenAI GPT Image

Use this skill for OpenAI still-image generation and editing. Do not route video, animation, speech, transcription, or music work through it.

Read claims by evidence label

  • Documented fact means OpenAI currently documents the behavior.
  • Production heuristic means a practical workflow recommendation derived from documented behavior and production risk, not an API guarantee.
  • Inference means a reasoned conclusion that must be validated on the actual workload.

Treat model names, prices, limits, supported parameters, regional availability, policy, and lifecycle dates as volatile. Recheck the linked official source immediately before building or quoting them to a user. The volatile facts below were verified 2026-07-09.

Start with the current lifecycle, not remembered model names

Documented facts, verified 2026-07-09:

Model Current role Lifecycle / migration action
gpt-image-2 Current production default for generation and editing; alias plus snapshot gpt-image-2-2026-04-21 Use the alias for automatic updates or the snapshot when regression stability is required.
gpt-image-1.5 Previous model Deprecated; scheduled API removal 2026-12-01. Migrate to gpt-image-2.
gpt-image-1 Previous model Deprecated; scheduled API removal 2026-10-23. Migrate to gpt-image-2.
gpt-image-1-mini Cost-efficient GPT Image 1 variant Deprecated; scheduled API removal 2026-12-01. Do not begin a new dependency on it; test gpt-image-2 with quality="low".
dall-e-3, dall-e-2 Legacy migration knowledge only Deprecated and removed from the API 2026-05-12. Replace, do not select.

Sources: GPT Image 2 model page, all-model catalog, deprecations.

Production heuristic: Default new work to gpt-image-2. Keep a deprecated GPT Image model only long enough to run a measured migration comparison against existing prompts. Do not choose a deprecated model merely because its per-image table appears cheaper.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
