cryptographic-practices-auditor

cryptographic-practices-auditor is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from codebygarv/Ai-skills. It costs 32 tokens per session (396 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A security review of encryption, password hashing, random values, token signatures, keys, and TLS settings. TLS is the protocol that protects data sent between systems over a network.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when reviewing encryption, password storage, JWT signing, webhook signatures, key management, or secure network configuration.
Why use it?
It helps detect obsolete algorithms, hardcoded keys, weak password protection, predictable random values, and other flaws that can expose secrets or permit forged tokens.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00032 $0.00396
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.00198
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00079
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00040

Security

Grade A, and why

cryptographic-practices-auditor scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Purpose

Audit source code and infrastructure configurations for cryptographic weaknesses: obsolete ciphers (MD5, SHA1, DES, RC4), hardcoded encryption keys, weak key derivation functions (KDFs), insecure random number generators, and flawed token signing.

When to Use

  • Reviewing password hashing, encryption at rest, and secret token generation.
  • Implementing asymmetric JWT signing (RS256 / EdDSA) or HMAC validation.
  • Validating TLS cipher suite configurations and webhook signature verification.

What to Analyze

  1. Password Hashing: Use of Argon2id or bcrypt (cost factor >= 12) vs obsolete plain SHA256/MD5.
  2. Symmetric Encryption: AES-256-GCM / ChaCha20-Poly1305 (authenticated encryption) vs insecure AES-ECB / AES-CBC without HMAC.
  3. Random Number Generation: Cryptographically Secure PRNG (crypto.randomBytes, crypto.getRandomValues) vs Math.random().
  4. Timing Attack Vulnerabilities: Constant-time string comparisons (crypto.timingSafeEqual) for tokens, HMACs, and signatures.
  5. Key Management: Storage of private keys in KMS / HSM vs hardcoded string constants in source control.

Output Format

  • Cryptographic Findings Table: [Component | Current Algorithm | Flaw | NIST/OWASP Standard].
  • Remediation Code: Drop-in secure cryptographic implementations.
  • Key Rotation Guidance: How to rotate keys without invalidating active sessions.

Avoid

  • Inventing custom home-grown encryption algorithms.
  • Using == or === for comparing HMAC hashes (susceptible to timing attacks).

What ships with it

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

cryptographic-practices-auditor is a skill published in the GitHub repository codebygarv/Ai-skills (25 stars, last pushed 19d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 32 tokens to every session and 396 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
