otel-collector-configurator

otel-collector-configurator is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from codebygarv/Ai-skills. It costs 26 tokens per session (421 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

An OpenTelemetry Collector configuration guide for receiving, filtering, batching, redacting, and exporting traces, metrics, and logs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to design pipelines for tools such as Prometheus, Jaeger, Datadog, Grafana Tempo, or SigNoz.
Why use it?
It helps organize telemetry from services while removing sensitive data and avoiding unnecessary observability traffic.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00026 $0.00421
Opus 5 $0.00013 $0.00211
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00084
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00042

Security

Grade A, and why

otel-collector-configurator scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Purpose

Architect and configure production OpenTelemetry (OTel) Collector pipelines to ingest, filter, batch, redact sensitive PII, and export distributed traces, metrics, and logs to observability backends (Prometheus, Jaeger, Datadog, Grafana Tempo, SigNoz).

When to Use

  • Centralizing telemetry across microservices without vendor lock-in.
  • Filtering out high-frequency health-check traces to reduce APM storage costs.
  • Scrubbing sensitive credit card or user authorization data from telemetry spans before exporting.

What to Analyze

  1. Receivers: OTLP (gRPC :4317 and HTTP :4318), Prometheus scraper, Jaeger receiver.
  2. Processors:
    • memory_limiter: Prevent collector process from crashing on traffic spikes.
    • batch: Buffer and compress spans before sending over the network.
    • transform / attributes: Redact sensitive headers, insert cluster/environment tags.
    • filter: Drop /healthz and /metrics traces.
  3. Exporters: OTLP gRPC/HTTP exporter, Prometheus exporter, Debug/logging exporter.
  4. Pipelines: Explicit traces, metrics, and logs service pipelines.
  5. Deployment Mode: Sidecar vs DaemonSet vs Centralized Load-Balanced Gateway.

Output Format

  • Complete otel-collector-config.yaml: Production-ready configuration.
  • Pipeline Architecture Diagram (Mermaid): Ingest $ ightarrow$ Processors $ ightarrow$ Exporters.
  • Resource Sizing & Tuning Guide: Recommended CPU/memory requests and queue sizes.

Avoid

  • Placing the batch processor before the memory_limiter processor.
  • Leaving /healthz endpoint tracing enabled at 100% sample rate.
Files

What ships with it

2 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
