rate-limiting-architect

rate-limiting-architect is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from codebygarv/Ai-skills. It costs 27 tokens per session (371 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A design guide for limiting how many requests a user or system can make to an API. It compares methods such as token buckets and sliding windows and considers shared storage, identification, and standard HTTP responses.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to design limits for public APIs, subscription quotas, or calls to third-party services. It helps choose the algorithm, tracking key, storage, headers, and overload response.
Why use it?
It helps protect services from abuse, overload, and noisy users while enforcing different usage limits. It also guides clients toward retrying correctly when a limit is reached.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00027 $0.00371
Opus 5 $0.00014 $0.00186
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00074
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00037

Security

Grade A, and why

rate-limiting-architect scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Purpose

Architect scalable, distributed rate limiting and traffic throttling systems using Token Bucket, Leaky Bucket, Sliding Window Log, or Sliding Window Counter algorithms to protect APIs from abuse and noisy neighbors.

When to Use

  • Protecting public APIs from DDoS, credential stuffing, and scraping.
  • Implementing multi-tier usage limits (Free vs Pro vs Enterprise quotas).
  • Managing outbound rate limits to comply with third-party vendor quotas (OpenAI, Stripe).

What to Analyze

  1. Algorithm Selection: Token Bucket (bursts allowed) vs Leaky Bucket (smooth pacing) vs Sliding Window Counter (memory efficient).
  2. Identification Key: User ID, Organization ID, API Token, or IP address (with X-Forwarded-For trust validation).
  3. Storage Tier: Redis cluster with Lua scripts (atomic evaluation) vs local memory vs Envoy/Kong API Gateway rate limits.
  4. Standard HTTP Headers: Return standard headers (RateLimit-Limit, RateLimit-Remaining, RateLimit-Reset, Retry-After).
  5. Graceful Degradation: HTTP 429 Too Many Requests response with actionable backoff guidance.

Output Format

  • Rate Limiting Blueprint: Selected algorithm, storage topology, and key design.
  • Redis Lua Script: Atomic multi-key sliding window or token bucket implementation.
  • Middleware Code: Express / Fastify / Go HTTP rate limiter with standard headers.

Avoid

  • Simple fixed-window counters that permit 2x traffic bursts at the boundary minute.
  • Executing multiple non-atomic Redis commands that create race conditions under load.
Files

What ships with it

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

rate-limiting-architect is a skill published in the GitHub repository codebygarv/Ai-skills (25 stars, last pushed 18d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 27 tokens to every session and 371 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
