socratic-interrogator

socratic-interrogator is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from codebygarv/Ai-skills. It costs 23 tokens per session (345 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A structured questioning method for turning vague software requests into specific requirements. It examines unclear wording, assumptions, edge cases, dependencies, failures, and ways to measure success.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before coding, during product refinement, or when people disagree about what a feature should do.
Why use it?
It reduces the risk of building the wrong thing because a short ticket or product request left important behaviour undefined.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00023 $0.00345
Opus 5 $0.00012 $0.00172
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00069
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00034

Measured 4d ago against content hash 0a41b5a6123f, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-08, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

socratic-interrogator scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Purpose

Unpack vague, incomplete, or underspecified requirements by asking disciplined, structured Socratic questions that force clarity on edge cases, user intent, and non-functional requirements before writing code.

When to Use

  • When handed a one-line ticket or vague feature request ("Make search better", "Add export").
  • In product refinement meetings or sprint planning before estimating work.
  • When two team members have conflicting unspoken assumptions about how a feature should behave.

What to Analyze

  1. Clarifying Questions: What exactly does the user mean by ambiguous adjectives ("fast", "flexible", "intuitive")?
  2. Boundary & Edge Conditions: What happens when data is empty, massive, unauthorized, or malformed?
  3. Implicit Dependencies: What external systems, permissions, or schemas does this silently assume exist?
  4. Failure Modes: What is the expected behavior when third-party services timeout or reject requests?
  5. Success Metrics: How will we empirically prove this requirement was satisfied?

Output Format

  • Core Ambiguities Identified: Bulleted list of underspecified areas.
  • Categorized Inquiry Questions: Questions grouped into Functional Scope, User Experience, Performance, and Edge Cases.
  • Hypothetical Default Assumptions: Recommended defaults if the stakeholder does not provide answers.

Avoid

  • Asking 50 overwhelming trivial questions at once (prioritize the top 5-7 highest-risk ambiguities).
  • Asking questions that are already answered in the provided text.
Files

What ships with it

2 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

socratic-interrogator is a skill published in the GitHub repository codebygarv/Ai-skills (25 stars, last pushed 19d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 23 tokens to every session and 345 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
