websocket-protocol-designer

websocket-protocol-designer is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from codebygarv/Ai-skills. It costs 32 tokens per session (390 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for designing real-time connections between clients and servers using WebSockets or Server-Sent Events. It covers how connections start, stay alive, reconnect, and recover missed messages.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for live chat, collaborative editors, trading dashboards, and notification feeds. It also helps choose a message format, authentication method, and reconnection process.
Why use it?
It helps prevent silent connection drops, duplicated or out-of-order messages, and lost updates after a temporary network failure.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00032 $0.00390
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.00195
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00078
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00039

Measured 4d ago against content hash 6a2e8231569c, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

websocket-protocol-designer scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Purpose

Architect reliable, low-overhead real-time messaging protocols over WebSockets or Server-Sent Events (SSE), incorporating connection lifecycle handshakes, heartbeat ping/pong keep-alives, exponential reconnect backoff, channel multiplexing, and reconnection state recovery.

When to Use

  • Building real-time collaborative editors, live chat, trading dashboards, or notification feeds.
  • Fixing zombie WebSocket connections that silently drop behind NAT firewalls.
  • Implementing message ordering and missed message replay after temporary disconnection.

What to Analyze

  1. Protocol Selection: WebSocket (bidirectional) vs SSE (unidirectional server-to-client with native HTTP/2 multiplexing).
  2. Frame Format: Lightweight JSON envelopes vs Binary MessagePack/Protobuf for high-frequency data.
  3. Heartbeat & Liveness: 30-second ping/pong frames to detect dead sockets through intermediate proxies.
  4. Reconnection & Catch-Up: Client reconnects with last_event_id; server streams missed events from Redis buffer.
  5. Authentication & Authorization: Ticket-based token exchange during connection handshake vs query param auth.

Output Format

  • Message Envelope JSON Schema: Standard frame format (type, channel, id, payload, ack).
  • Connection State Machine: Client connection lifecycles (CONNECTING, CONNECTED, RECONNECTING, CLOSED).
  • Server/Client Implementation Snippets: TypeScript / Node / Go socket handler with ping/pong management.

Avoid

  • Authenticating sockets by passing static JWT tokens in URL query strings (leaks into proxy access logs).
  • Missing backpressure controls when broadcasting to slow mobile clients.
Files

What ships with it

2 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
