api-context

api-context is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from cyanheads/eurostat-mcp-server. It costs 79 tokens per session (11,090 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of api-context, Apache-2.0.

A reference for the context object passed to every tool and resource handler in an MCP server. The context carries request details and provides access to logging, storage, cancellation, and additional input.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when implementing MCP handlers that need logging, request tracing, tenant or session information, stored state, cancellation, or user input.
Why use it?
It gives handlers one consistent place to obtain request identity, track operations, store temporary state, and handle multi-step input.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00079 $0.11090
Opus 5 $0.00039 $0.05545
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.02218
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.01109

Security

Grade A, and why

api-context scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Overview

Every tool and resource handler receives a single Context (ctx) argument. It provides request identity, structured logging, tenant-scoped storage, multi-round-trip input collection, and cancellation — all auto-correlated to the current request.

The framework auto-instruments every handler call (OTel span, duration, payload metrics). Use ctx.log for domain-specific logging and ctx.state for storage inside handlers. Use the global logger and StorageService directly only in lifecycle/background code (setup(), services).

Context interface

import type { Context } from '@cyanheads/mcp-ts-core';

interface Context extends RequestContext {
  // Identity & tracing (inherited from RequestContext — see § RequestContext)
  readonly requestId: string; // Unique per request, auto-generated
  readonly timestamp: string; // ISO 8601 request start time
  readonly tenantId?: string; // JWT 'tid' claim; 'default' for stdio and HTTP+MCP_AUTH_MODE=none

  readonly traceId?: string; // Trace containing this handler execution

  readonly extra?: Readonly<Record<string, unknown>>; // Correlation bag — the one open field

  // Dual-sink: Pino on the server, plus notifications/message to the client.

  // when no `enrichment` block), strictly typed on HandlerContext<R, E> against the
  // declared fields. Kind-tagged helpers: enrich.notice / .total / .echo.
  readonly enrich: Enrich;

  // Non-text content blocks (image/audio bytes) for the calling model — prepended

  // pushes a raw ContentBlock.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

api-context is a skill published in the GitHub repository cyanheads/eurostat-mcp-server (5 stars, last pushed 5d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 79 tokens to every session and 11,090 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). It is 100% identical to api-context, differing in 4 lines, and is treated as a copy.
