readability

readability is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from danicat/speedgrapher. It costs 119 tokens per session (3,056 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A copyediting workflow for making dense technical writing clearer. It removes unnecessary jargon, familiar AI-generated phrases, and difficult sentence patterns while preserving terms that are needed for accuracy.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to revise documentation, articles, and drafts for clearer wording, lower reading difficulty, and more natural prose.
Why use it?
It helps readers understand technical material without decoding status-oriented language or unexplained abbreviations. It also targets paragraphs that are hard to read rather than changing the subject matter.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00119 $0.03056
Opus 5.5 $0.00048 $0.01222
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00024 $0.00611
Haiku 4.5 $0.00012 $0.00306

Security

Grade A, and why

readability scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Readability: jargon mitigation, deslopification & copyediting

readability turns dense, bureaucratic, or synthetic drafts into clear, human-authored technical prose. It combines three complementary disciplines:

  1. The 4-Step HBR Framework to remove status-signaling jargon and raw acronyms while preserving technical accuracy.
  2. The 5-Dimension AI Slop Purge (deslopify) to eliminate LLM clichés and re-establish natural syntax.
  3. Per-Paragraph fog and vale Hotspot Remediation to fix density issues via Speedgrapher MCP metrics and references/tropes-and-jargon.md.

1. Why Technical Prose Gets Bogged Down: The HBR Jargon Insight

Writing loaded with jargon signals insecurity, not mastery. They found that professionals who feel low status lean on unexpanded acronyms and abstract vocabulary to manufacture authority. The strategy backfires: readers trust plain, concrete explanations more. In "Does Your Office Have a Jargon Problem?" (Harvard Business Review, March 2021), Zachariah Brown, Eric M. Anicich, and Adam D. Galinsky analyzed thousands of texts to track why people hide behind buzzwords.

Functional Precision vs. Status-Signaling Jargon

Technical copyediting must never "dumb down" real engineering concepts. Before cutting a technical term, classify it into one of two buckets:

Classification Definition Examples Editorial Action
Functional Precision (KEEP) Exact computer science primitives, protocol names, syscalls, or metrics that have no simpler accurate synonym. mutex, goroutine, idempotent, B-tree page split, p99 latency, CRC32C checksum, epub, mmap Keep the term. If the term is an acronym or domain-specific concept that a cross-functional reader (The Scanner) might not know, define it briefly on first mention.
Status-Signaling Jargon (PURGE) Bureaucratic noun stacks, slide-deck metaphors, and inflated verbs used to sound impressive rather than specify a mechanism. orchestration layer validation methodology, operationalize, leverage, utilize, holistic paradigm, single pane of glass Purge immediately. Replace with the concrete system actor, a plain active verb (use, run, validate), and the exact mechanism.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

readability is a skill published in the GitHub repository danicat/speedgrapher (51 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 119 tokens to every session and 3,056 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-17.
