USStats

USStats is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from danielmiessler/LifeOS. It costs 226 tokens per session (2,990 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A searchable collection of long-running US statistics and current government indicators. It covers subjects such as the economy, debt, living costs, health, crime, energy, and demographics, with information about each source.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to compare US indicators over time, ask whether a measure is improving or worsening, inspect trends and correlations, and retrieve current figures from FRED, EIA, and Treasury data.
Why use it?
It avoids gathering comparable figures from many separate datasets and makes the source and direction of each measure visible. It can also distinguish historical trends from current readings.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00226 $0.02990
Opus 5.5 $0.00090 $0.01196
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00045 $0.00598
Haiku 4.5 $0.00023 $0.00299

Security

Grade A, and why

USStats scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 5 executable files (Tools/FetchFredSeries.ts, Tools/GenerateAnalysis.ts, Tools/UpdateSubstrateMetrics.ts, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

USStats

Contents: Ideal State · Intent Routing · Data Contract · Data & Config · Quick Reference · Gotchas · Examples

Query and analyze the annual US indicator dataset at the almanac endpoint named by data_url in the install config (<configRoot>/LIFEOS/USER/CUSTOMIZATIONS/SKILLS/USStats/Config.md) — read-only, keyless, no local repo dependencies. Every series carries publisher provenance (source, sourceUrl, note) and a goodDirection flag that lets the tool answer "better or worse?" deterministically.

It also reads the current US economy straight from the government APIs (ported from the retired USMetrics skill, 2026-10-10). The one count and source list for that side, read from the updater's METRICS config in Tools/UpdateSubstrateMetrics.ts on 2026-10-11: UpdateData fetches 66 indicators in 9 categories (Economic Output, Inflation, Employment, Housing, Consumer, Financial, Trade, Fiscal, Demographics) through three APIs, FRED (64 series, carrying BLS, BEA, Census, Fed and Treasury data), EIA (gas price) and Treasury FiscalData (total public debt), into the local US-Common-Metrics dataset (US-Common-Metrics.md, us-metrics-current.csv, us-metrics-historical.csv). The master document lists 68 metrics in 10 categories; its Health & Crisis rows (CDC WONDER, EPA AQS) have no fetcher and stay placeholders, and a master row the updater did not fetch is named, never silently counted. GetCurrentState produces a multi-timeframe (10y/5y/2y/1y) trend report with cross-metric analysis, pattern detection, and research recommendations from its own FRED and EIA fetch, so it does not depend on an UpdateData run. The almanac answers "over decades, annually"; the live side answers "right now, monthly and weekly".

Ideal State

  • Every answer about a US indicator rests on this session's tool output from the live dataset, names the publisher of each quoted series, and judges better or worse only through goodDirection.
  • Year-to-date values, methodology breaks in note, base effects behind large percentage moves and the correlation-is-not-causation caveat reach the reader whenever they touch the numbers quoted.
  • A freshness question gets a per-upstream fresh or stale verdict from a --fresh run, and nothing in the skill ever writes to the site or its upstream datasets.
  • Every live-economy number reported is current and carries its period and source, whether it came from GetCurrentState's own FRED and EIA fetch or from the dataset UpdateData refreshed, and preliminary or stale figures are labelled as such, never presented as final.
  • A "how is the economy" answer covers the report's eight categories across the four timeframes, names the categories it does not cover (Demographics, Health & Crisis), and ends with what deserves a closer look, without claiming that one metric caused another.
  • A failed source or missing key degrades the result visibly (the affected metrics named) instead of aborting it or hiding the gap.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

USStats is a skill published in the GitHub repository danielmiessler/LifeOS (19,616 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 226 tokens to every session and 2,990 once invoked, about $0.0009 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-28.
