freeze

freeze is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from darkroomengineering/cc-settings. It costs 43 tokens per session (411 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

An editing guard that is meant to limit changes to one chosen session folder. In standalone Codex, it cannot enforce that boundary.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when you want to designate which directory agents may edit, with the stated limitation.
Why use it?
It prevents accidental edits outside a debugging area only in environments where its guard is supported; here, the boundary must be followed as a convention.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00043 $0.00411
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.00205
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00082
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00041

Measured 3d ago against content hash fcb2d079c893, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

freeze scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Freeze: Lock Edits to a Directory

Standalone Codex: unsupported

Stop here in standalone Codex. The plugin does not install a freeze guard for apply_patch, so this skill cannot enforce an edit boundary. Do not write freeze state or claim a directory is locked. Tell the user the operation is unsupported and use explicit file ownership as a convention only if they want to continue without enforcement.

The remaining workflow is Claude-only.

Restrict Edit and Write to a single directory. Any edit targeting a file outside the boundary is blocked by the freeze-guard PreToolUse hook. State persists in ~/.claude/tmp/freeze.json, tagged with the session that set it — a freeze forgotten from a different session or project self-heals away automatically instead of blocking the next session's edits.

Note: notebook edits (NotebookEdit) and shell writes (Bash) are not gated — the boundary covers the file-editing tools only.

Set the boundary

If the user named a directory, use it. Otherwise ask which directory to lock to (AskUserQuestion, free-text path). Then run, substituting the chosen path for PATH:

bun ~/.claude/src/scripts/freeze.ts set "PATH"

Confirm to the user that edits are now restricted to that path, and that they can lift it any time with "unfreeze".

Lift the boundary

bun ~/.claude/src/scripts/freeze.ts off

Check current state

bun ~/.claude/src/scripts/freeze.ts status
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

freeze is a skill published in the GitHub repository darkroomengineering/cc-settings (42 stars, last pushed 5d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 43 tokens to every session and 411 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
