outlines

outlines is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from davidtoby/agent-skills. It costs 17 tokens per session (4,009 once invoked), scanned B, a copy of outlines, MIT.

A Python library for making language models return data in a required format, such as JSON, XML, or a Pydantic-checked object. It can constrain the model while it generates each token.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to generate schema-validated JSON, classify text into fixed choices, or produce typed Python data from local language models.
Why use it?
It reduces the need to parse malformed model responses or retry when required fields are missing. It also helps keep generated data consistent across different local model backends.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00017 $0.04009
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.02005
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00802
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00401

Security

Grade B, and why

outlines scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Outlines: Structured Text Generation

When to Use This Skill

Use Outlines when you need to:

  • Guarantee valid JSON/XML/code structure during generation
  • Use Pydantic models for type-safe outputs
  • Support local models (Transformers, llama.cpp, vLLM)
  • Maximize inference speed with zero-overhead structured generation
  • Generate against JSON schemas automatically
  • Control token sampling at the grammar level

Installation

# Base installation
pip install outlines

# With specific backends
pip install outlines transformers # Hugging Face models
pip install outlines llama-cpp-python  # llama.cpp
pip install outlines vllm # vLLM for high-throughput

Quick Start

Basic Example: Classification

import outlines
from typing import Literal

# Load model
model = outlines.models.transformers("microsoft/Phi-3-mini-4k-instruct")

# Generate with type constraint
prompt = "Sentiment of 'This product is amazing!': "
generator = outlines.generate.choice(model, ["positive", "negative", "neutral"])
sentiment = generator(prompt)

print(sentiment) # "positive" (guaranteed one of these)

With Pydantic Models

from pydantic import BaseModel
import outlines

class User(BaseModel):
    name: str
    age: int
    email: str

model = outlines.models.transformers("microsoft/Phi-3-mini-4k-instruct")

# Generate structured output
prompt = "Extract user: John Doe, 30 years old, [email protected]"
generator = outlines.generate.json(model, User)
user = generator(prompt)

print(user.name)   # "John Doe"
print(user.age)    # 30
print(user.email)  # "[email protected]"

Core Concepts

1. Constrained Token Sampling

Outlines uses Finite State Machines (FSM) to constrain token generation at the logit level.

How it works:

  1. Convert schema (JSON/Pydantic/regex) to context-free grammar (CFG)
  2. Transform CFG into Finite State Machine (FSM)
  3. Filter invalid tokens at each step during generation
  4. Fast-forward when only one valid token exists

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

outlines is a skill published in the GitHub repository davidtoby/agent-skills (10 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 17 tokens to every session and 4,009 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (asks the agent to reveal its instructions). It is 86% identical to outlines, differing in 7 lines, and is treated as a copy.
