python-typing-idioms

python-typing-idioms is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from denyszhak/pystack-skills. It costs 161 tokens per session (2,563 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of modern conventions for adding type hints to Python code, including interfaces, generics, reusable type names, and builder-style classes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when writing typed Python modules, designing interfaces, defining domain identifiers, or working with FastAPI dependencies.
Why use it?
It makes code contracts clearer and helps tools catch mismatched values and method usage earlier.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00161 $0.02563
Opus 5.5 $0.00064 $0.01025
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00032 $0.00513
Haiku 4.5 $0.00016 $0.00256

Security

Grade A, and why

python-typing-idioms scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (examples/generic_repo.py, examples/id_types.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Python typing idioms

Modern typed Python is a different language than typed Python five years ago. PEP 695 (Python 3.12) made generics and type aliases first-class. Protocol finally displaced ABC for most interface use cases. The Self type lets @classmethod constructors and builder-style methods type themselves correctly.

This skill encodes the idioms that hold up in 2026 typed Python.

When to use this skill

Apply these rules whenever you're:

  • Writing a new module with type annotations
  • Adding types to existing code
  • Designing a class hierarchy, especially one used as a port/interface
  • Building cohesion methods (from_X, to_Y)
  • Defining ID types or other domain primitives
  • Working with FastAPI Depends (the Annotated[X, Depends(...)] pattern)

The rules

1. Protocol for interfaces; ABC only when you need shared implementation

abc.ABC couples interface to inheritance. Protocol types by shape, which matches Python's duck typing and lets unrelated classes satisfy the contract without inheriting.

from typing import Protocol

class Notifier(Protocol):
    async def send(self, to: str, body: str) -> None: ...

class EmailNotifier: # no Notifier in bases
    async def send(self, to: str, body: str) -> None: ...

class SMSNotifier:
    async def send(self, to: str, body: str) -> None: ...

async def notify(notifier: Notifier, to: str, body: str) -> None:
    await notifier.send(to, body)

await notify(EmailNotifier(), "[email protected]", "hi")
await notify(SMSNotifier(), "+1...", "hi")

Use ABC only when you genuinely need partial implementation that subclasses must extend. For pure interfaces (the common case), Protocol.

2. Self for classmethod constructors and self-returning methods

Self (PEP 673, Python 3.11+) lets a method return "the subclass that called me" without TypeVar ceremony.

from typing import Self
from dataclasses import dataclass

@dataclass(frozen=True, slots=True, kw_only=True)
class Money:
    amount: Decimal
    currency: str

    @classmethod
    def zero(cls, currency: str) -> Self:
        return cls(amount=Decimal("0"), currency=currency)

    def with_amount(self, amount: Decimal) -> Self:
        return type(self)(amount=amount, currency=self.currency)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

python-typing-idioms is a skill published in the GitHub repository denyszhak/pystack-skills (4 stars, last pushed 5mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 161 tokens to every session and 2,563 once invoked, about $0.0006 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
