KiCadRoutingTools: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/make-3d-movie/SKILL.md

make-3d-movie is a skill for Claude Code from drandyhaas/KiCadRoutingTools. It costs 132 tokens per session (2,393 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool for making a 3D video of a circuit board being placed and, optionally, routed. It uses KiCad, a program for designing electronic circuit boards, and can include 3D models of parts.

In plain words
What is it for?
Creating placement-only board movies or movies that show recorded routing chains, using board, group, intent, and seed inputs.
Why use it?
It turns the board-placement and routing process into a recorded visual result instead of leaving the process as files or commands only.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00132 $0.02393
Opus 5.5 $0.00053 $0.00957
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00026 $0.00479
Haiku 4.5 $0.00013 $0.00239

Security

Grade A, and why

make-3d-movie scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 182 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Make a 3D movie

Invocation: /make-3d-movie <board.kicad_pcb> [--route BOARD:SET] [--seed N] [groups.json] [intent.json].

  • --route films the whole flow: the seeds placed, the judged ones fast-routed, the best one routed in full. BOARD:SET names the stress-corpus board whose recorded chain routes it, as its name and set number.
  • --seed picks the seed of a placement-only movie (default 0). A kept seed is filmed with its start (Step 4).
  • A given groups or intent file is used in place of writing one.

movie3d/README.md says what the movie shows and how it is made.

Step 1: Setup

From the repo root, check:

  • movie3d/node_modules exists. If not, run cd movie3d && npm ci.
  • node and ffmpeg are on PATH, and KiCad 10's kicad-cli is installed.
  • If the render later fails for want of a browser, run npx playwright-core install chromium-headless-shell from movie3d/, or pass --browser a Chrome or Chromium executable.

Work in wk/<run>/, named after the board. Copy every board with python3 -X utf8 py_router/copy_board.py <src> <dst>, never a bare cp.

Step 2: Prepare the board as plan-pcb-placement does

The movie places the board with place_simple, as /plan-pcb-placement does, so prepare it the same way. Read that skill (.claude/skills/plan-pcb-placement/SKILL.md) and do these sections of it:

  • §2, reading the board: board_brief, board_context, and its two references (part-roles.md, placement-lessons.md). Its questions to the user about EMC limits are for a real placement; a movie can skip them.

  • §3.1, place and lock the fixed parts:

    • the connectors at the edge, the switches and buttons the enclosure reaches, the module headers, the mounting holes and fiducials;
    • take their poses from the input when it is a believable layout.

This is what keeps the mounting holes in their corners and the connectors and switches on their edges in the movie. A part left unlocked is re-placed like any other.

  • Then pile every other part off the board, so the movie starts from the piles and nothing starts where the input had it:

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

make-3d-movie is a skill published in the GitHub repository drandyhaas/KiCadRoutingTools (706 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 132 tokens to every session and 2,393 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-24.
